German Luger

My dad recently passed away and left a German Luger he brought back from WWII. The gun is all original, dated 1939, and has two clips with identical serial numbers as the gun. The holster is dated 1937. It's been stored the last 65 years and is in good shape. Do you know a price range for this?

    I. Own three German Lugers, two are blue the third is nickel plated with black plastic handles (don't think they are ivory but don't know). My question is we're any all Lugers from Germany blue or did Germany have any of their Lugers payed for officers. I have two 380 orgies I guess they are a pocket pistol officers carried one is blue and one is nickel plated. We're they are like that.

    Some bad news about your P08. They didn't come with nickle plating.

    If byf is stamped in the toggle link (part that buckles up) it means the Luger was made by Mauser. The 1940 indicates the gun was made in 1940 but the byf code on the toggle link was only supposed to appear on guns with 41 and 42 dates on the receiver ring. The gun may be made up from parts. The last two digits of the serial number should be stamped in most of the parts of the pistol.

    In original finish and with matching parts your pistol would have easily brought in excess of $1,000.00 but now it is considered only a shooter.

    Perry Shooter, The letter below the sn on military Lugers was changed after the number reached 9999. They went from 1 to 9999 with the letter a below, then from 1 to 9999 with the letter b, etc. None of my Luger reference books mentioned the change of letter having anything do do with the year.

    Unfortunately Herschel pretty much nailed it. The krauts didn't nickel plate their issue firearms. This was commonly done by GI's to their souvenirs, to pretty them up for spinning tall tails during show and tell at the VFW.

    Depending if and how your pistol was buffed or polished prior to being nickel plated, it still might retain substantial value. That's why it would be desirable for you to post quality photos of it.

    BYF Is Mauser Germans used Code for makers name during WW II the serial numbers started at 1 and went to 9999 then they changed the letter each year Your serial number 1679 should have the last two digits 79 on many of the small parts so it looks like your pistol was a parts gun made up from more then one pistol and then Nickle or more likely Chrome plated after WW II by who know Whom[V] . Now worth 20% of what a excellent original condition with all matching parts would be worth [:(]

    You also want to measure the bore; it could be either .30 cal or 9mm. If .30 cal, value will be even lower as few folks are looking for a "shooter" in that caliber.
