Winchester Mod 100

Willys 1948
My Uncle died and left a mod 100 .243. I've cleaned it up but when cycling bullets through the extractor is not locking on to the shell. Anyone have any ideas other than "take it to my gunsmith".

    Couple of things- are you "riding the bolt" closed, or pulling it back, letting it go? The bolt needs a certain amount of force to snap over the rim of the cartridge. Other point- is the extractor lubed and free to move? The 100 IS one of those rifles that you will need to strip down and clean after shooting- If you do not have an owner's manual, go HERE: http://www.winchesterguns.com/customerservice/request/owners-manual.asp

    ALSO- there was a recall on the Model 100- firing pin tip could break, wedge in bolt, and have uncontrolled full auto fire. To see if YOUR rifle has been modified, call Winchester with the serial number- OR- remove magazine, turn rifle so you are looking into the magazine well. Draw bolt back, and look on the underside of the "roof" for a letter stamped there. If not modified, Winchester will do it for you.

    Thank you very much. I am not knowledgeable about this rifle Yes, I was probably being too cautious when cycling the bolt so I'll let it slam shut harder. It seems everything is working properly and clean. I'll check the recall stamp too and get it fixed if needed.

    Willys 1948, know that I have seen you here abouts, but welcome, none the less.

    11b6r is "right-on" with his feed-back and pointers regarding the Winchester Model 100. If not letting the bolt loose to return to battery freely ... one had best ease it forward until there is contact and then exert sufficient forward pressure on the bolt handle for it to seat forward and secure properly. When maintained best (ie. clean and properly lubricated) it seats with lesser effort.

    Remember ... one can seat the bolt quietly when the need exists ... but one must push the bolt with comparable force seat properly after the forward contact is made.

    Probably know of more missed potential shots at deer behind this ... than deer bagged!

    Painting the floor works out pretty well ... if one doesn't paint themselves into a corner! (without a window there handy to crawl out!)

    Oh! The flip-down rear sight will be flipped down ... for a goodly number of shots at game ... if one does not jerrry-rig it to remain in the UP position.

    It can be a great and handy rifle ... it just has nuances, as possibly most all firearms.

    M 100 .243s are kind of scarce . Especially Pre 64s , if you have one of these in decent condition the value will only go up ! Just pull that Handle back and let it go !
