Colt 25 1908 vs Taurus Judge

I am contemplating trading my Nickel 1908 Colt 25 Auto for a Taurus Judge (SS). I also have the original manual and 2 magazines Give me your thoughts about the Judge and and my Colt.

    keep the Colt you can't buy one new but if you get some future funds you can get a judge any where at any time. The Colt will go up in value the Judge will go down.

    No brainer, keep the Colt. Colts are like savings bonds that you can shoot.

    I had a judge for awhile. It was very disappointing both accuracy and functioning wise. IMHO it's more a novelty/conversation piece then a practical firearm. As long as it's functional and reliable it would be only useful as a short range personal defense firearm.

    I notice lot of used ones for sale. A lot of disillusioned folks like I was, probably getting fed up and dumping them.


    EDIT #1, If the Colt doesn't have a factory original nickeled finish, it's collectors value would be minimal. If this is case with your pistol, and you want a close range personal protection handgun? The Judge loaded with .45 Long Colt cartridges would be much more effective than the Colt .25, as long as the Judge was functional and reliable

    You have five (5) BAD things going for you on this deal and Zero (0) good things going for you:

    1. You would be trading a classic Colt firearm for a less desireable one. And, that is putting a good spin on how bad the deal is for you.

    2. Taurus firearms, in my opinion, are low-end, poorly engineered or reverse-engineered, unreliable firearms, fraught with problems.

    3. I consider the Taurus Judge to be a hyped up fad gun, much like a Rambo knife...useless. I feel the Judge not accurate, does not lend itself well for concealed carry and is of little value for anything other than to show your friends, the smarter of whom will feel sorry for you for swapping your Colt for this piece of scrap iron, which I consider the Judge to be. My opinion is that once the public figures it out that the gun writers and the magazines have vested interests in hyping and glorifying the Taurus Judge, the gun will go the way of the Edsel. I shouldn't say that, because that is a slap in the face to the Edsel, which was a well-engineered car! I consider Taurus engineering to be poor.

    4. It is simply a poor trade for you, even given that your Colt .25 auto is not the most desireable of Colt firearms and is a poor manstopper. But, your Colt is always going to be worth more than the Taurus Judge, and not just monetarily.

    5. The guy that wants to make the swap with you has figured out all the above and is trying to unload the Judge for your Colt because you do not know. Now you do.

    Keep your Colt. By the way, wipe it down and give it a coat of some good preservative, such as BreakFree CLP.

    Lot of aftermarket nickel plated Colts are out there. Because they were refinished outside of the Colt factory they are thought of as being only shooters by collectors. This has a very negative affect on their value.

    Keep the colt. It is a classic that you probably regret getting rid of down the road. If you want a pistol that shoots a shot shell the taurus is great. I have one and love the thing but dont buy one expecting to shoot 45 colt with amazing results. The judge is a great point and shoot gun and is very effective in distances less than 10yds. Way too many people are mislead what the judge is meant to do

    IMO Despite the (ridiculous) ad campaign about South Florida Judges actually carrying these, the Judge (in ANY of the various configurations) is simply not suitable for CONCEALED carry. Its just too damn bulky.

    This gun might make sense for OPEN carry in the woods or swamp where you might need a "snake" gun. But other than that one specialized application, its more of a gimmick than a "working" gun.

    A .25, no matter how anemic the round, actually is suitable for concealed carry. So *if* you need a carry gun, I'd say keep the .25. I'd also add that if you really want a carry gun, there are FAR better choices than EITHER a Judge or a Colt .25!

    That issue aside, I basically agree with all of the above.

    Judge, IMO is just not a useful, well built, or collectible gun. Colt .25 is of limited use as a carry gun, but if it has a factory original nickel finish and the original manual and mags, it should have good collectors value and it will only continue to appreciate with time.

    I wouldn't trade it for a "Judge".
