Thursday while working I have a casual conversation with professional acquaintance. He mentions he needs to sell a gun blah blah blah it's a 1991A1 HMMM
He bought it to help an employee but wife won't let him keep it ... any way
One c-note later (yes i said one) it's on its way home with me. Ran the serial # it's all good!! and it shoots pretty good too. Very little wear other than the slide lock scratch. Flawless first hundred rounds. Then lovely wife picks it up for a couple mags and informs me that it is her new favorite!!!
I was thinkin of hangin some bells and whistles on it... I don't like the trigger to start with, but hey, if mamma likes it...
Question is, What might you change on it and why. Can I find Ex slide release, grip safety etc with finish that nearly matches at least?

I always use Brownells, either their on-line catalog, or call their customer service folks for any kind of parts or accessories for 1911's. 0 -
Some folks will replace the plastic trigger & main spring housing with steel parts from Brownells. But, there's nothing wrong with plastic parts here, just personal aversion to plastic. Any other mods will be a waste of time & money; it's not meant to be tricked out gun.

I thought you had to be a government agent to get on NCIC.
Or are you one?
As to what to change, nothing that your wife likes as is.
Also, an extended slide release is generally a bad idea. They are prone to getting bumped or kicked into engagement before the magazine is empty. Better to learn to trip the standard one with the off hand.0 -

Yes I was suspect, My Brother in law is LEO and I work with many. Anyone can check to see if a suspect firearm is stolen. Down side is that if it is you lose the weapon and the money you spent. Upside is that rightful owner gets their property back. You can just call most PD's and even some pawn brokers will do it also.
I use my offhand thumb for slide release, So far it has not been comfortable for my wife. But she is outside shooting it now. So maybe she'll figure it out on her own.
When I first got it I thought, what the heck, Nice platform to play up from. I can't get a low grade frame for that price and I have a fair amount of older surplus parts around. I may still fit another slide/barrel. Just for fun. Maybe nothing at all.
I may be the last hold out for the arched mainspring housing. Might try that just to see if wife likes that. Besides the afore mentioned plastic parts, everything else on the inside is the same, correct?
Ok I went back and checked, no plastic here either... hmmm HAwk I have never seen this Mal, though I guess it could happen, just looking at ways for it to work in wifes hand with least amount of shifting]0 -
I have this Colt and it does not have a plastic trigger or spring housing yours may be plastic! I have taken the Colt all the way down to the frame and there is no plastic except the grips and I changed the grips to wood. This is a combat weapon and the one I have shoots great out to about 20 feet and I am going to keep it the way it is. If you start hanging things on the pistol it will never soot any better unless you have it tightened up and a good trigger job. If you start adding up everything you want on it you may end up spending as much as you would for a really nice 1911 that needs no modifications.

Get a hold of a Brownell's catalogue and go to the 1911 section. The first thing I always change is the grip safety, put on a beavertail to keep the web of your hand from being chewed up. You can go with extended slide stop/release, extended safety ambi or strong side, extended mag release, change out the mainspring housing to flat or arched smooth/grooved/checkered . . . well you get the idea. You can just about do anything your wallet will allow with the 1911. 0 -

2. The only thing I'd change on that gun are the stocks (ie grips), and that's only because I think wood ones would look nicer.
If your wife likes it, I'd put whatever SHE liked on there.
