Winchester 56 in .22 short Value?
Local auction house has a Winchester 56 in .22 short being sold this weekend. Pics are not great but from what research I've done the stock looks to be modified. The front is tapered instead of have a schnabel and there's a line carved from the back of the bolt to the bottom of the stock that runs parralel to the curve of the pistol grip. If the stock is junk what might the value be assuming it is otherwise complete and in, say, 75% condition?

Yes, I checked. Only found one sold recently and it went for $833. It looks like there were something like 1000 model 56 sold in 22 short, question is how badly a modified stock lowers the value of this rifle? 0 -
unless they made a different model that used the same stock I would say 50% because it would be near impossible to find a correct replacement stock. 0 -
I suggest you be smart and stay away from bidding on this gun. Auction houses will not guarantee anything for you and without the ability to do a properly have the gun evaluated you are going to get screwed. (Notice I did not say you might get screwed.) If you did have the gun evaluated, you would get a strong caution to stay away from it.
A live auction environment will very often have starting bids exeeding the value of items that have a strong emotional bidding response and the rubes will go crazy bidding up an item way beyond its value. Also, very often, auction houses will have shills bidding up items so the rubes keep raising their bids. My suggestion to you is to stay away from it. You already know it is altered. Don't make a project out of trying to polish a turd.0 -
This isn't a firearms auction, they usually have a just a few guns a week. Some of their stuff goes dirt cheap, it depends on the crowd and the weather. Tomorrow is supposed to be miserable. [:)] 0 -
First of all it is a winchester model 57 not a 56. There were fewer 56's made than the 57, thus the true 56 is worth more. This is a 57 with a custom stock. The 56 did not have a cheek piece or checkering. It is a nice piece, but you need to know more about it's history. If it was a factory special order, then all bets are off. But I don't think it is. 0 -
I don't know what auction you were looking at, this was a local auction in Maine. It was a model 56 short in a home-made stock with no mag. It sold for $65 OTD (not to me) 0
