Rem. 700 vs 721

What are the differences between the 700, and the 721 that would cause you to use one over the other to build a Rem. .280 A I? The only real diff, that I can see is in the floor-plate. In either case we would be looking at a new Bbl. THX HAWKSHAW

    For the use you describe, there is really no difference between the models except for the stamped trigger guard/floor plate on the M721. This would be replaced by 'BDL' hinged bottom metal or you could skip it altogether and use the ADL-style of no floor plate and a simple trigger guard. The other differences are mechanical and of no real importance for function and safety.

    I have a few 700s and just one 721 (300 H & H) and don't see any difference in the action. The extractor on the bolt is the same, same ejector, I would say the same trigger too - I know they adjust the same way.

    How far down are you stripping the receiver and parts being replaced?

    There may be differences in "trueness" so to speak, lug engagement, threads and barrel lug and the technical measurements of the action but from a layman's POV I see them as being the same. My Remington 700 bolt fits fine in the 721 - not fine for firing of course but it does function.

    Safety lever on 721 is different, the 700 has a bit shaved off tang for its safety. SO if you want to put 700 trigger with safety on 721, you either have to shave tang a bit, or use 721 safety lever. If you want to put 721 in 700 stock, you have to shave a tiny bit for the 721 lever.

    IMO, 721 is the smoother action, older, maybe better metal but i am no metallurgist.

    I am doing a 721 in 25-06 right now, because I had a 721 action.

    Only problemos, 721 extractors are hard to find, so you can have it converted to Sako extractor if yours fails. Also I have heard of 721 bolt handles coming off with heavy use/abuse.

    I'm not completely sure on this, but IIRC, the 721 and 700 bolts/handles are solid forged. The 788 bolt handle is silver-soldered, which is the one that is weak in case you load hot a couple/few too many times.

    Edit:

    To the OP, the only differences I know of are the bottom metal and the years/calibers they were built in.

    One other slight difference: on the 721, the bolt handle is bent straight down; on the 700 it sweeps slightly backward. Requires minor inletting if you swap stocks between the models.
