Unknown sword with scabbard
A sword with scabbard. What is it? I see a little shield I'm assuming is American, yet French writing. When was this made?
It has a heavily rusted tip. It was hung in an area of my grandfather's house where we had a bad roof leak. I have used hopps 9 with a soft bristle gun cleaning brush to get the tip where it is now. How can I preserve this piece? Is it worth preserving? I feel the scabbard will be its end. I don't know how much rust is inside the scabbard.
Help!

I'm willing to take guesses?

Well. In case you were wondering. The Northern Irish (WTH?!) Militaria website I found says I own a Chilean warranted French made cavalry saber. In the condition it is in may be worth 150 bucks. Some are up in worse condition for 800 but aren't getting any bites. 0
