I am a novice at this, 1st one I ever refinished with oil saturated wood. what is whiting or a trip tru the oven?
I was tempted to stick the satrated end into mineral spirits or bleach and dawn dish soap but I am worried it would soak up too much fluid and crack when it dried out again.
Heat seems to be really hard on older wood too, I once put a piece of wood under a heat lamp to dry quickly and it cracked

GENTLE heat. Nice, bright sunny day and keep hitting it with an old towel. Whiting may be a good product to use near the end of this process (look it up at Brownells...they will have it and likely a good explanation of exactly what it is) when simple sunlight has ceased working so well.

I have used heat and acetone with good results. Once you get all (or most) of the oil out, the wood will be "soft" and dry. You need to replenish the wood with thinned out tru-oil or I use Watco danish oil. Something that is thin enough to penetrate deep and then harden.

Whiting is basically calcium carbonate (chalk) powder, used in paints, fine polishing agent, etc. Make a thin paste of acetone and whiting, paint on wood. Acetone, a solvent, soaks into wood, flushes oil out, where it is absorbed by the powder. After throughly dry, brush off oily powder, repeat. Acetone is very flammable.

Forget bleach- does not dissolve oil. But you might try this- roll wood in a couple of layers of brown paper grocery bags. Place inside BLACK plastic trash bag. Lay it in direct sun, turn once an hour. Inside trash bag gets to about 170, oil is soaked up by brown paper. Repeat as needed. Used that on a SMLE stock that could have solved world's oil shortage. Took 5 days and a dozen paper bags. You CAN try newspaper, but paper bags have no ink on them.
