Siamese Mauser

I have from what I can gather a Siamese Mauser , sights have been ground I believe that make it 8x52R mm Type 66 version . It has a Tokyo Arsenal stamp . The action is smooth and clean with the dust cover in tact. The bore appears clean the shiny. The the whole rifle I still covered with arsenal grease. I haven't had a chance to clean it much and the metal will probably clean up very nicely. I know very little about these rifles and have no idea what they are worth. Any other info. would be great.

    I 'used to' buy these 3/$75 but that was 'then'. in average cond. like your they will 'sell for $250/$400 on the auction side. a lot were converted (rebuilt) to .45/70, I even made one up in .50/110 win.

    These were, as you know, made for the Siamese government by the Japanese; I believe you hae the most common arsenal there as well. Once upon a time, these were $40 mil-surp mail-order items, but some enterprising individual figured out that with the big based , rimmed cartridge, you could with little modification (that's relative for sure!) convert it to accept 45-70. The beauty of this is that the Siamese Mausers were tough like Kelseys nuts and will withstand pressures that would make any unmodified lever gun become shrapnel. Check out Ken Waters' loading maps for the different levels of pressure in 45-70 reloads. The only guns I remember being in the top (class IV, I believe) escelon strength-wise are the Ruger #1 (and Likely #3) and the aforementioned Siamese Mauser. This set up a rush on Siamese mausers and as a result, there are fewer and fewer left unaltered. Consequently, that cheapo mil-surp now is becomming fairl;y rare, and thus pricey.
    Yours is a little rough cosmetically as far as wood goes, but the metal (and I hope bore) looks to be in a lot better shape. If I were to hazard a guess, I would say about $350 to $400 because of the better than average mechanical condition. I also agree that you have the recalibrated sight, making it an 8 x 52, as opposed to an 8 x 50. Also, if you look at the wrist and buttstock, you will note the nice reddish tint that these were known for. If you are going to clean it (and I wouldn't much at all) use those clean areas as a refferrence as to original color. Chakra also intact and readable and a nice dust cover. All in all a nice gun.
