Can 7.62x39 shoot in a 5.56x45 barrel?
I was looking on the auction side at a kit that is for sale. It says a preban receiver but it is a MAK90 receiver that is 7.62x39. The barrel is said to be a 7.62x39 but it looks to have the 5.56x45 flash hider so I believe the barrel is 5.56x45. I am not sure about the barrel size but if I am correct, wouldn't this be dangerous?
I would not think the 7.62 would fit into the 5.56 chamber. right?
If I am wrong on my belief, I humbly apoligize. I am not here to cause problems, I just do not want someone hurt or mislead about an item.

You are right to ask. Absolutely no way will the 7.62 even chamber in a 5.56x45 barrel. The flashhider might have been drilled out to accomodate the 30 cal bullet or just a similar design. NEVER try to chamber or fire ammo that doesn't exactly match the caliber designation stamped on the firearm's barrel. 0 -

Yeah, you are right on both counts, the the 7.62 round will not fit in the 5.56 chamber and the 7.62 bullet will not fit in the 5.56 barrel.
To put it in glaring perspective, the 5.56mm bullet is roughly equivalent to a .22 caliber bullet.
The 7.62mm bullet is roughly equivalent to the .30-06 or the .308 bullet.
Imagine trying to push a .30-06 bullet through the barrel of your .22 caliber plinker.0 -
Nearly all AK muzzle attachments, even those which appear to be made for the AK-74, will have a .30 caliber bore, just to be sure that you can always get the larger projectile through it if you put it on the wrong caliber rifle. As cpermd mentioned, AR muzzle breaks come in different calibers but they also use different threads to ensure you can't screw a .223 break onto (say) a 9mm barrel, which uses a fine thread; 1/2X36 compared to 1/2X28, if I recall correctly. 0 -

Of course, you can't fit a .312 or .308 caliber bullet through a .224 caliber bore. . .at least not in any way you'd want to try!
But as mentioned, you can't draw a conclusion about the caliber of the gun based on the external appearance of the flash hider. Basically you can get one with any appearance for any caliber.
You also can't necessarily draw a conclusion about the caliber of the gun based on the receiver its built on, particularly an aftermarket build. I believe you CAN build guns in different calibers based on a standard Kalashnikov receiver. If you're unclear about the caliber of a gun you're looking at, ask the seller to clarify for you.
As a minor point, while there are such things as 5.56x45 caliber Kalashnikov-pattern rifles (eg the Israeli Galils are basically that) more of them are AK-74 style in 5.45x39. The 5.45x39 is similar ballistically to a .223, but it uses a totally different case.0 -
Thanks to all for your replies. I emailed the man yesterday about my concern and he answered me today. It is a barrel taken from a Norinco NHM91 in 7.62x39 with the flash hider most often used with the 5.56x45. Thanks again. 0
