Winchester model 90 question

I have a winchester model 90 serial #657,248 in 22 long. According to the Ned Schwing book everything looks to be correct but I do have a question about the barrel markings. I believe that I have a seventh barrel marking (90-6) since the serial # puts it there and the barrel is stamped "90" rather than "1890". The question I have is that the caliber is not stamped next to the model # with a dash in between them but it is up next to the receiver (see pics 3&4). I see no mention of this in the book. Any ideas? I have found one that is marked like mine here on GB so I don't need to post any of my own pics. Thanks.

    I have a Winchester Model 1890 .22 Rifle (2nd Model)and the slot in the left side where the firing pin locks the bolt has a piece pinned in the action that has the locking notch in it. My question is..... Has any one seen this modification ( were any made this way) and did the factory ever do this type work?........ Thanks

    Todd your barrel marking for the subject serial number is correct as is the placement of the caliber marking. In effect, what you have is the sixth barrel marking (90-5), as explained by Schwing on page 105 in the very last sentence of the top paragraph. In essence these markings will be see on model 90's from 400,000 to 690,000. I have one with these same markings and serial number range too.

    I see what you are saying but in the last paragraph on page 104 it says that it should be stamped "MOD 1890" and mine is stamped "MOD 90" [?]

    Hello toad67,

    The barrel on your rifle is a transitional piece. Winchester almost never made any change that can be tied directly to a specific serial number or a tight serial nuber range. Your barrel was evidently made & marked right near the tail end of the 90-5 period and near the begining of the 90-6 period.

    Thanks, Bert. Would you say then that Schwing did not cover this particular "barrel marking"? There are a great many model 90's that ae marked in the same manner as Todd's is marked.

    No sweat, just sorry to have not been more careful to you with my response. I have not studied this particular issue much in the past fifteen years.

    I can not speak for Ned, but it does appear that he did not specifically discuss all of the transitional markings.
