Slow Rust Bluing Questions

SLOW ! As I recall, something in the order of 300rpm or less with an 8 inch "soft" wheel. You're just looking to brush off the loose rust, not abrade the hard coat under it. The process goes something like this: Starting with clean metal (and dry gloves) the bluing solution is applied and the metal (barrels) are stored in a "hotbox". (a couple of 100 watt bulbs will do) After a period of time, (several days to a week) the metal is dipped in clean boiling water. Boil for several minutes and then begin the carding process. Once you have removed the loose rust, repeat the process until you achieve the "texture" you are looking for. NEVER touch the metal with bare fingers. One smudge of oil and your finished! The parts will only get "gray". The "blue/black" comes with the application of oil (linseed) when you decide your ready to stop.
