Gun Safe

I'm looking into getting a gun safe with fire protection. Only thing is I'm kinda stupid on this subject. I looked on line and they all seem about the same to me. My price range is gonna be around $500.00 and I'm thinking 10 to 12 guns should be plenty big enough. Any opinions or info would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello, I am looking for info on what is thought to be the best gun safes on the market. Need some input from folks that. What do you have and why do you like or dislike it.

    I'm using a "Golden rod" in mine. So far so good. I'm in the soggy northwest, and haven't had any issues as yet.

    I also live in the soggy pacific NW and I have had my new safe for almost 3 years. I use one big box of silica gel and change it regularly. I'm not happy with the way my guns and knifes are looking. I am now trying to figure out how to get power to the safe for a heat unit.

    Buy a golden rod and be done with it. I have it in 3. Sooner or later you will forget to regenerate the gel, and rust here we come.

    Use a lighted power strip when you plug in your goldenrod. I have 4 safes with the goldenrods installed. The lighted power strips allow me to see if power is there for the golden rods. The 1st safe I put it in I had tripped over the cord and hadnt relized I had no power to the safe for a couple of weeks. Some safes I dont open for months on end. The goldenrods have prevented rust for many years.

    I live in the Northeastern US. The weather here can go from really cold(below zero), to 50 degrees in a day. I have several safes, and I use two golden rods in each one, and a quart paint can with refridgeration grade dessicant in it. Once or twice a year, I pull the dessicant out and stick it in a 350 degree oven to reactivate/freshen it up. That is why I got the dessicant(molecular sieve), as it has better adsorbing properties than silica gell, and can be freshened up easier.

    Mark Christian, is on the money. If you have enough to warrant a safe, then a couple hundred $$ more is worth the extra protection, to use both.

    vette81......you don't tell us where you live or where you have your safe. If you live in a humid area you need to use all the dehumidification that you can...goldenrod, gel, perhaps even a light bulb on all the time. If in a house with dehumidification, you will need less. In a garage that is not sealed, more. I live near the beach and have a Liberty in the garage and use everything and still have a problem![:(] Good luck

    I use absolutly nothing in N.J. in my liberty safe and have no problems. I dont put a dehumidifier in mine because I was told it would draw all the moisture out of the stocks and they would split or crack.I dont know if this is true or not but I have never had a problem with rusting and N.J. is very humid in the summer.I would call the manufacture and get their opinion and go from there.

    I throw the silica packets in the bottom and pad the bottom with foam to keep it off the base for better air flow. No problems.

    I use the golden rod and damp rid and it works good for me in a damp basement. Buy the largest rod you can fit. Midsouth shooters has the cheapest price I found $32 for a 36" rod. I just ordered two, for the new safes I got.
