For better response you need to title your topic. ".38 spl in .357mag" or such and then you will get more feed back.
.38 spl fired in .357 mag length chamber does leave some powder residue at the case end in the chamber and may possibly cause .357mag to chamber tightly, if not cleaned regularly. Accuracy may be affected depending on the pistol and the load, less than your ability to shoot a handgun. You are right in assuming that any free bore allows a bullet to enter the rifling at a different angle from shot to shot but your dealing with a pistol which also allows the bullet to jump at the cylinder gap to throat area of the barrel anyway. Probably "free bore" more of a concern with a rifle than a pistol. Many shooters like to underload the .357mag case and thus duplicate a .38spl round and yet avoid the mentioned problems by retaining the longer case of the .357. If your buying loaded ammo most likely at a discount, accuracy is not paramount, you may find that sight setting for .38 spl round will not be the same as your .357mag round due to recoil, bullet barrel time and so on.
Gee... With a cup of coffee I think I over did this, simple answer:
fire away no damage, keep your cylinder chambers clean.
