Springfield Model 1911 A1 45 ACP Problem

My Springfield 45 shoots great and very seldom jams but lately I have problems with the last cartridge fired is caught in the slide and crushed. All the other cartridges eject perfectly but the last crushes. Can anyone tell me what I should do to correct the problem?

    Sounds like you're talking about a "stovepipe", where the ejected shell isn't thrown clear and gets caught in the ejection port.

    If it always happens on your last round, try a different magazine. Bad mag follower may be contributing to this.

    You might also try just holding your gun tighter. Less rounds in mag = less mass = more recoil snap = more chance of jamming with less than perfectly tight grip.

    When the last round is fired the slide should lock open. So how could it crush the case?

    Is this slow feed of the last round always with the same magazine? If it is there may be a mechanical interference between the floorplate and the index hole at the top of the magazine that causes the round to be fed a bit slower and get caught by the slide as it comes forward into batttery. If it occurs with all magazines check to see if either of the top grip screws protrude into the magazine well. Do this by removing the slide and running a small straight edge down into the mag well from the top and scraping it across the screw holes. If there is interference have a gunsmith dress it down for you - the bushings have very fine threads and are easy to cross.
