22-250 vs wind?

How far does say a 50gr 22-250 move left/right in bout 15-20mph wind at 200 yds. Thank You for your time.

    Using the Hornady v-max factory load, and my NightForce ballistics program, it is 3.9"for 10MPH, 5.8 for 15MPH, and 7.9 for 20 MPH. In otherwords, about 1MOA for each 5MPH.

    That 55 grain Ballistic Tip winchester factory load is 6.6 inches at 20 MPH...and less drop too!

    I do understand your point, and concern. I do also use your type of techniques when shooting long distance. However, this gentleman is trying to asses which round will, or how a round will fare in the wind. Just telling him how to judge wind, is not going to cut it to answer his question. He needs(asked for) NUMBERS. Got any? I did answer the OP's question.

    Charts are great, but you need to learn how to "read" the crosswind. Is it blowing LtoR at 50yrds from the muzzle....what is happening at 100 yards away???...and so on... the charts assume a constant 90 degree cross wind along the entire range.

    a steady wind and an occasional gust are different.

    One hint, you need to put your load on paper, in the aforementioned conditions to know the real value.

    when I have shot benchrest matches, the wind may gust or blow, but the wind flags are what you need to watch. You pick a "condition" under which you shoot. That means if you see the windflags at say 7 o-clock as the majority of the time, you wait to fire for effect until the windflag reads 7 o-clock.

    Firing randomly under any number of wind values, will result in marginal groups. Firing under a similar wind value will tighten groups up considerably.

    Anyhow, Having a 'close' ballistic chart is a god-send. In the past I used to base my purchases on 'advertising' ballistic charts that looked too good to be true. They were. Unknowingly as a kid, I was shooting in the high desert and that gave my bullets that added advantage that you see on paper. However, get down to sea level on a 60 degree day w/ air density of 29.92 and my bullets didn't go as far.

    That said, a chart is a good place to go if you need to buy something, like a rifle or bullets. If you have a twist that will accomdate the heavier bullets you will generally note that compared to lighter bullets in the same caliber you get less drift. That brings us to the rifle. If you get the chance to buy the tighter twist, do so. You can stabilize 'longer-for-caliber bullets'. Short bullets in relation stabilize just fine unless you push them too hard and they spin apart.

    So, charts are a good place to start your plan. Getting the actual data is the next best fun thing to do.

    Anyhow, I used JBM (50 SBK) and Hodgdon, for drifts/velocites. Using the lower average speeds of the 50 gr. bullets (3700) I'm seeing about 4.2" or 2 MOA of drift in a 10 MPH wind. Double that for a 20 mph wind and 1-1/2 times for a 15 mph wind. Again, actual data may vary depending range terrain and wind...etc, etc. For the 55 (SBK again) I used 3600 and got 3.9" drift or 1.9MOA. So, there is your short answer. The long answer would be to try one or the other and go out and shoot them and then report back here what you got. Also, rifle, how you measured wind, relative direction Atmoshperic conditions....

    Thank you sandwarrior, JustC, and babun for all the great Wisdom! I don't know the twist on a used Savage 12 22-250 ?I just bought on GB.... It will b a little while before I get it. It's old enough not to have the accu-trigger... Do u guys know the twist with out a pic or s/n?

    If it's a pre-accutrigger model 10/11/12 then it will be a 1-12" twist. Those will stabilize up to about a 60 gr. bullet. I recommend Hornady A-max's for your application. However, Sierra has great bullets too. For a top notch hunting combination use the Nosler 60 gr. partitions.

    Sandwarrior, u must b mind reader!!! When I get the gun, I was gonna ask if anyone knew the twist (best weight bullet) for the pre accu- trigger model 12 22-250... I've been lookin at midway for weights and prices. Thanks again for the Very useful Wisdom!!
