What is the proper way to...

Operate a pistol's heel mounted magazine release (i.e. Sig P230/232). Pinky of the shooting hand,thumb or other finger of the supporting hand, or something completely different.

I haven't really found a comfortable way to do this and want to be tactically sound (eyes on threat not fumbling like an idiot) as I really want to start carrying this pistol.

    Thumb & forefinger of weak hand.

    Known as "European mag release" configuration. Makes little sense to us Yanks.

    Roll the catch to the rear with the weak hand thumb while the forefinger hooks over the toe of the floorplate. Push with the thumb and pull with the forefinger, the magazine will go a long way.

    Not as fast as the so-called American side button (First wide appearance on the Luger.) but there is none of the wait and confusion you see when a side button catch magazine fails to "drop free."

    You remove the "European" heel-release type magazine with the NON-shooting hand. Just push on the heel with the thumb, and pull the mag down and out with the other fingers.


    Several advantages to this "European" style heel mag release:

    -Its ambidextrous.

    -Basically impossible to release the magazine accidentally.

    Dropping a loaded mag to the ground by mistake could be merely embarrassing or even potentially fatal depending on when and where this happens.

    It also makes it much harder to LOSE the magazine due to droppage.

    -Mag won't drop to the hard floor and break (potentially a plus if the mag in question is a $125 mag for your SIG P210!).

    Most shooters dislike the heel type mag release because its not as "tacticool" and slows down reloads a hair, but personally, I like it, especially in TARGET type guns. For example, this gun, (which is a 100% American Hi Standard) uses a "heel" release:
