Looking at an Italian gunmakers site it said their shotguns were one of the 5 or 6 "best guns".

What does the term "Best Gun" mean to you?Sage1

    Who can argue with that? That is the BEST gun.
    I think you will find "best gun" came from British double guns that were of the highest quality by the maker. Most were "bespoke" or to say pre ordered to a specific owners size and specifications. Some British items are also termed "top drawer" again a descriptive phrase without real substance. Over time "best" was applied to the Italian market, again designating their highest quality gun. Rare is the term "best" used in reference to a German or Austrian guns. Here in America we like to use "premier grade".
    Judge the firearm on its' own quality of workmanship, materials and makers reputation.
    My opinion, others may differ, that is why you came here.

    I think of "best gun" either in the British sense of the top of the line in quality of construction and embellishment OR in the Internet Vocabulary as the best make and model for MY use.

    But "Italian gunmakers site it said their shotguns were one of the 5 or 6 "best guns"." is pure advertising. There are definitely some very good Italian shotguns but that phrase just sounds like something done by a catalog copywriter.

    The term "best gun" is used to describe a double-barreled shotgun of the highest quality and finish. A top grade gun from a top manufacturer. One of those few shotguns intended to compete in the marketplace on the basis of quality, design, and workmanship rather than at a price point. A best gun is the finest gun a really good shop can build, and it is intended to be competitive with the best any shop can build. Most best guns are bespoke guns, made to order for a particular customer who is willing to pay a premium price to own the best. Best guns are still built in limited numbers by highly skilled craftsmen in most of the traditional gun making countries of the world. A little later in this article I will mention some of the most famous of these.

    I think in the context of shotguns, term "best gun" specifically refers to the highest possible end custom shotguns.

    These are, quite literally speaking, the absolute best possible guns.

    That is to say, these are guns built entirely by hand from super highly figured woods, custom engraved and checkered, and specifically fit to the customers anatomy in terms of grip size/shape, length of pull, stock cant, etc.

    A gun like this is a work of art, a status symbol, and a highly functional weapon all in one.

    Price tag on these STARTS at about $20,000 (and goes MUCH higher).

    I would agree with about everything said so far with the exception that "Best" starts around $50K these days.

    I'm old school and believe that when someone is saying "Best" in reference to a double barrel shotgun they are talking London Sidelock ejector or one of that quality.

    Fit, finish, inletting, detail, wood quality & finish and fit of internal parts,proper hardness of stressed parts as hammers,triggers, sears,firing pins, springs as well as screws and pins supporting these parts.
    Interior quality isn't apparent but it ties in to reliability after a lot of use.
    Some years back an Austrian maker,Ferlach or imported by Flaigs,of Drillings and double rifles, advertised in the Rifleman and other mags as a premier maker of first quality.
    They were beautiful on the outside and engraving was ornate but there were mechanical complaints by owners.
    If I were looking for a high end shotgun not just to look at, I'd talk to some well heeled Trap and Skeet shooters about fine guns that hold up. I know Krieghoffs do.

    The 'best gun' is relative to the user in the eye of the beholder, it is the most useful firearm that keeps food on the table, bad guys off the property and evil hands off the Constitution and is that which is ready at a moments notice.
