1911 hammer

I have a Kimber CDP 9mm , don't know 1911's. I use this gun for home protection and leave the hammer cocked with one in the chamber and the safety on. Will this "wear out" the hammer spring?

    NO, a 1911 is made to be cocked and locked.
    Just take it out and practice with it so it gets used and cleaned and lubed.

    The 1911 pistol was designed to be carried "cocked and locked" with round in chamber, hammer back, and safety engaged.

    Keeping it this way for prolonged periods of time, should NOT wear anything out.

    In general, keeping springs under tension doesn't wear them out. The way to wear out springs is to CYCLE them. So the the only way you're going to wear out the hammer spring is by shooting the guns thousands or tens of thousands of times.

    If, after several thousand shots you notice inconsistent ignition, then you can think about replacing the hammer spring.

    Thank You Beantownsshoota, have 60 rds through the gun so far... I think it will out last my lifetime. First 1911, love the feel and accuracy, but need to practice my cleaning. I won't shoot a gun without cleaning it that night; No matter what , but the 1911 is harder for me than the rest of my semi-autos.

    I agree with all that's been said, but do have a slightly different take on the situation. As has been pointed out, cocked and locked is how the 1911 should be "carried". I also doubt that any of us will live long enough to see good springs go bad through the practice you suggest.
    That said, I have friends who are firefighters and they tell me they worry more about the one chambered round that might go off in a fire than about the powder, primers and loaded ammunition that might flare up and pop off in the heat.
    I don't feel like my home security is compromised by making sure that I have no loaded chambers in the house, unless and until, the situation demands it.

    Only reason I keep it loaded and cocked is that there home invasions going on around here in Tulsa. My double action 9mm in the bed room is loaded but not cocked and I don't really want to use my 44 cause of the neighbors. I do put the guns in my safe when I leave. If somebody does kick in my door... I want to say wrong house! As I put a rd or two in their chest... Not hold on , let me chamber a round. Thanks again for All u guys help
