S&W Reply Re Smokeless vs Black Powder
This is the first actual S&W info on this subject ever offered on this subject. On Feb 7 I wrote to S&W asking for info. I believe this is of interest to the early S&W collectors and shooters.
Feb 23 I received reply from S&W Mr Roy Jinks to my inquiry about use of smokeless powder in S&W revolvers. Specifically I am interested in the top-break DA .44s.
His letter says that S&W's 1906 catalog, did not guarantee their revolvers when used with smokeless but the 1909 catalog that statement had been removed. He also says the 1909 listing of the .44 DA only shows black powder cartridges with it.
Mr. Jinks included copies of those catalog pages which I include below. In reading the title SMOKLESS POWDER S&W is much concerned about smokeless at times being "dangerously inconsistent", strongly advising against use of "reloaded smokeless ammunition" -- "and guarantee our arms when factory ammunition loaded with this explosive is used."
My reading of this material settles the question that in 1909 S&W guaranteed its arms when used with factory loaded smokeless.
The dates on the copies are those applied by Mr. Jinks. The 1906 Catalog page was word-for-word same as the 1909 but for including the guarantee removal. I have cropped margins & enlarged the S&W material to improve readability.

As a side note, I find it interesting that the .44 russian with 23 grains of black powder penetrated one more board than the 44 wcf with 40 grains. 0 -
Interesting. Penetration I hadn't noticed. Thanks for your comment. Maybe the heavier bullet penetrated more. 0
