    In what??? In a remington 700 it would be a long action the same length as an 8MM Mauser as in 7X57MM or 8X57MM

    The 7mmMauser or 7x57 was originally produced in the pre 1898 versions of the Mauser bolt action rifle. The pre 98 versions including the '91, '93,'95 and '96 amongst others are sometimes refered to, in recent decades, as intermediate length actions. Meaning that these actions are not long enough to convert to shoot the 30-06 length cartriges without undue amounts of customization, while still being longer then needed for 308win length cartridges. Some of these actions are also considered to be not as safe or strong as the 98s as thier bolt bodies do not include the classic third rear bolt lug, some like the 1903 Turks however are true 98s and include this. The vast array of just the Mauser action offerings make your question very hard to answer. If you then add in possible commercial offerings then I'm sure you can see the problem. So what particular action/rifle are you asking about? If you don't really know then pictures would be good...

    Thanks, The guy asked me and I dinn't know the answer. What he was looking at was those new Ruger RSI that are out in 7X57. I guess this is not as clear cut as say a 308 or a 30-06.

    The Ruger uses the long (.30/06 length) action.

    Winchester and Ruger used long actions. IIRC, the 7x57 Classic that Remington put out in '82 was a short action. The 8x57 they put out in '04 was a long action. IMO any Mauser based case should be in a long action. That would include the .22-6mm, .6mm Rem, .257 Rob, 6.5x57/6.5-.257, 6.8x57 (wildcat), 7x57, 7.62x57(.30 cal wildcat) 7.92x57 (8mm), 9x57 and 9.3x57. And, any cases based off the 6.5x55mm Swede, which is in fact a Mauser case. That 1/4+ inch over a .308 based case, makes it too hard to use long for caliber bullets.

    Bottom line, if you are building a 7x57 on a Remington action, get a long action. I didn't like the short action they used on some Mauser cases.
