This week end I look over a 16 ga SxS with exposed hammers marked American Arms Company. The barrels are steel, fixed chokes, with American Gun Co on the side plate. The barrel flats look a little rough but the case colors are good. The barrels do not indicate 2 3/4" chambers but they do not look like 2 1/2" chambers. Does any one know anything about this company? Is it an import? About how old? Thanks.

Edit: I appreciate the information. I was off base on my guess, I figured it was an imported gun of more recent manufactured date. Even with it being in great condition, extending the chambers for this type of gun doesn't seem like it would be worth going to the trouble.

    With out pics, here goes.....it's a $200 gun, common around the 1890 - 1930"s. And I bet it has 2 9/16" chambers. if you have to shoot it, use only low brass/low power loads, AFTER you check the length of the chamber. A new 2 3/4" shell may fit into it when it is unfired, but may be too long when the folded pie crimp spreads open. The ammo of the early years used rolled crimps and was shorter.

    What it sounds like you have there is a Crescent Hammer Gun, made in CT. The "American Gun Company" trade name was one of the most common names found on the hammer guns. If it is a Crescent the barrels should be marked "Genuine Armory Steel" and "Choke Bored".
    These are good guns for someone who wants a hammer SxS for cheap that can still be used. Most are a little loose and pretty worn because they were cheap hardware store guns that got a lot of field time by their owners. The smaller the guage the more money they would command. However a 16g. would not do much better than a 12 in most cases.
    These are usually $100-200 guns all day long for 12g examples.
    I just sold a very nice original condition and very tight actioned 12g. for $300 a short time ago.

    Sounds as if you are doing one of two things. Either misreading the names or you have a parts gun. AMERICAN ARMS COMPANY and AMERICAN GUN CO or AMERICAN GUN COMPANY were two different makers. American Arms Company was located in Boston,MA from 1877 to 1893 and in Bluffton, AL from 1893 to 1901. American Gun Company Co or American Gun Company was a name used on shotguns made by the Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1931). Neither name is an imported gun. Give us the correct name and the serial number of the gun and we can tell you who made it and when.
