Winchester Model 43 Help
Were these drilled and tapped by the factory ? Had one come in with a scope on it .. Serial number 56147A..thanks guys

My findings have been that the Model 43's were only drilled and tapped for a reciever sight (on the side), but were not drilled for a scope. I have a Winchester Model 43, 218 Bee with a scope on it. I am a collector, but yet there are some of my rifles I definetly want to shoot. So as far as my 43 goes, I'm glad that its drilled for a scope. What a great little varmint rifle, and the 218 Bee is a fun and very accurate cartridge.
On a side note,.......has anyone ever found serialization charts for the Model 43's? All I've ever found is they were made between 1949 and 1957.

Blue Book says subtract 60% if non factory drilled and tapped (early models)? 0 -
Yes drilled and tapped at the factory starting somewhere around 35,000-40,000 someone may correct me on those numbers but I believe that is right. Mine is factory drilled for scope mounting and it is serial#44xxx 0 -

Yes, I have seen the serialization records for the Model 43. Roughly 50% of them were factory drilled & tapped on the receiver bridge for scope blocks.
Production of the Model 43 began in May of 1948, and it ended with serial number 62617 on December 28th, 1953. Winchester officially discontinued the Model 43 in 1957.0 -
Ok, I stand corrected. The few books I have didn't state that some of them were drilled and tapped. The comment in Blue Book actually led me to believe they were not drilled. I assumed mine was non-factory work. It is Ser. # 48612A, so maybe it is factory original.

Bert does my serial number tell us if this was drilled at the factory ? Also if it wasnt drilled and tapped by the factory but drilled by a gunsmith would this cut the value in half of the firearm ? 0 -

The serial number on your rifle tells me that it was factory drilled & tapped for scope blocks.0 -

I too believe that may be the case, but I simply have not studied enough of them to substantiate that belief.0
