Gov't Model Barrel Replacement
Hello,
I did a site search and came up blank, so here is the question: Is there any drawback to replacing a 5" barrel on a Gov't Model with a 7" barrel?
I am hoping to improve accuracy and perhaps muzzle velocity.
I already know about the bushing to barrel tolerances, and I know that there may be some fitting adjustments, so that isn't what the question is about. I'd just like to know if there are any cautions or adverse effects of installing a longer barrel.

Normally improving accuracy is associated with increasing the sight radius which you wont be doing with just a longer barrel, but you will increase velocity. Also, if you carry the gun in a holster, it wont fit anymore if the holster has a closed bottom. 0 -
I don't have a 7 inch barrel in a government model frame but I do have a 6 inch barrel in one of my match pistols with 5 inch slide. "picture available on request".This barrel shot so well out of my barrel tester I did not want to cut and re-crown . less then 1.5 inches at 50 yards. Ten shot group. However I have a number of match Government model match pistols. And I suggest the 7 inch barrel will not shot more accurate the a 5 inch barrel . Auccuracy is a function of Proper fit of the barrel to the slide as only ONE of many things needed to build a match grade 1911 Pistol. As to velocity the 45acp when used in a pistol out of your hand Is mostly used at 50 yards or less and 50-FPS difference in velocity will not make a WITT of difference in punching a hole in Paper ,Tin CAN, or person/animal.
Edit Wow sorry I flunked but it will not be the first or last time . let me try this answer "if you want to do it then do it" . Done properly it will not HURT a thing as long as you do not modify ANY original parts. I did state I had a longer then normal barrel in a normal length slide and that this arrangement worked well just mine was 6inches not seven. I suspect you could also use the 16 inch barrel they currently sell to make a buttstock legal to install on a standard government model frame. The even sold a Rifle kit that turns a 1911 pistol into a rifle and both The dominator and Springfield made single shot long barrel pistol conversions I had one in 308 Winchester and the other in 223. Does any know of any adverse effects of installing a 7" barrel on a Gov't Model? Is anything bad going to happen?
The idea behind this was so that I could preserve the original barrel and bushing in pristine condition for future resale, but enjoy the heck out it in the mean time.
The current build is accurate and the tolerances of the slide assembly and the frame engagement are perfect. A precision barrel won't do much more improvement than .5" @100yds and 3-5 ft lbs of energy with a 230 grain projectile @100 yds is not a big deal. Minutes of Angle are easy to figure out if you know math plus the variables and the sights are properly bore-sighted. I'm not asking any question beyond "is this a bad idea."

Sorry Perry, the question was "Is there any drawbacks to replacing a 5" barrel..." with a 7" barrel. If this had been a test, you'd a flunked!

It will look "funny", make the gun harder to carry and/or conceal, and the gun may not fit a standard holster with the longer barrel.

With ordinary 230 grain ball ammo, going from 5" to 7" will add about 60 fps muzzle velocity. IMO, its really not worth bothering just for that.
As to accuracy, the only way you're going to increase the intrinsic accuracy of the gun is if you're installing a higher grade barrel than the one that's in there, and having the longer barrel precision fitted to your slide.
In practice, you're probably not going to notice any increase in accuracy.
You might increase *practical* (not intrinsic) accuracy of the gun by increasing the sight radius, but unless you're going to try something "crazy" like adapting this match SIG p210-5 arrangement or replacing the slide too, I don't see how just a longer barrel will help:

The new 7 " barrel and bushing took a little machining, but fits great and the kids think it looks cool. 0 -
Looks like you did a good job . I used to put Bomar ribs with extended front sight on my pistols to give a longer sight radius . However when red dot scopes were allowed and my eyes got older,longer Ribs & slides became a moot point. Though you might like picture of the match pistols I use currently one does have 6 inch barrel. other 2 are Kart 22 conversion units with 6 inch barrels. 0
