Creating a .35 Remington Bolt
I want to create a bolt action rifle in .35 Remington. I know the 358 Winchester and the 35 Whelen are better and I know I can get a .35 Remington in semi-auto, lever and pump but that is not what I want. The Remington 600 and the Remington Model 30 Express and the Remington Model 7 cost way too much money as I actually want to USE this rifle and not look at it. My question is: in your opinion what would be the best bolt to start with for a custom bolt in this caliber and what caliber bolt face would work best on this conversion? The .308 seems relatively close and too bad one cannot get a barrel for the Savage because THAT would be relatively painless the way Savage has the barrel nut system....any ideas?

What makes you think that?
Pac-Nor chambers .35 Rem and will do prethreaded Savage barrels.
I don't know if the Savage .308 bolt face and extractor will handle the .35 nor how well the magazine might work.
Of course if you are a proficient gunsmith or have a large budget, I am sure it can be made to work.0 -
How about the Savage Model 25? I think it can take the 5.45x39, which is almost as big as 35 Rem but higher pressure. The gun would have much sleeker lines than a 110 and might cycle a little more smoothly because of the long receiver ring. Its smaller size would be in line with the slightly smaller 35 rem cartridge, if you had enough action length. 0 -
Hate to tell you this, but there are plenty of 700's out there in 35 Remington, as well as Model 7's, and the 673, I believe was also made in 35 Remington. Remington also made the XP-100, and XP-100R's in 35 Rem.
The cost you have in a build will be way more than buying a rifle of the above. It will cost a minimum of $1500.00, by the time you are all said and done. You will have to have the bolt face welded, and remachined, new extractor, modify feed reals, inless you want a single shot, then stock, and bedding, etc.

The base and rim diameters of the .35 Remington are only approximately .010 smaller then the standard .308 based cartridges. As only half of that will factor in when the cartridge is fed through the magazine. I believe you could use a standard bolt that is set up for the .308 Winchester and similar sized cartridges, i.e. you won't have to have the bolt welded, remachined and a new extractor fitted. Nonsense could probably could give you the straight skinny on this. 0 -
Hawk...thanks for the Pac-Nor reference. I have never heard of them and after looking at their web site they look very promising. I really thing the Savage would be the best action in .308 as I think it would work without too much bolt face problems. I have been shopping on GunBroker for 2 years and have not seen a 700, Model 7, Model 600 or anything in .35 Remington go for under $1,000 which is OK but as I mentioned before I really want to USE this rifle and I feel like I am taking away from the collector world taking a low production rifle and beating it up. If I just wanted to HAVE one the $1,000 would not really be an issue. The Savage might come in about $800 and I would not feel guilty beating it up! 0 -
I had a Remington 600 in 35 rem rechambered to 358 win some 37 years ago by Rusk Gun Shop in Madison, wisconsin. No alterations to the bolt face (or anything else) was required and it has always worked like a charm. 0 -
I have never heard of a 700 in .35 Remington. Are you sure you don't mean the Winchester model 70. I have both a 600 and a Remington 30 Express (no model 70) in .35 Remington--I use them but don't beat them up. It is claimed that Savage will custom make a 110/10 in anything you want. Why don't you start there. 0 -

Yes, I am very sure of a 700 in 35 Remington. I have seen limited editions that were made exclusively for different distributors.0 -
Remington 700 or model 7's in .35 rem will cost you over $2000 if you can find one. The same gun in .35 Whelen will be $700. You can search the auctions side for them, you will find maybe two in the .35 remington. I believe the only bolt action besides the "normal" 600 series Remington offered in 35rem was the Mod 7 lightweight full stock custom. All others were "one-off" specials that were ordered in that caliber. 0 -
You might consider the 350 Remington Mag. It isn't far behind the 35 Whelen. Also consider the 9.3X62. CZ makes an exellent rifle in that caliber and can be had for less than $1000. It is just about the equal of the 35 Whelen in performance. 0
