What does this term mean?

  When they started production, Ruger SNs were sequential numbers. At some point (I don't know the year), they changed to a 2 digit prefix for each model. So, for example, the Blackhawks would be given a prefix (let's say, 30), & all Blackhawks would be numbered 30-00001 & up.
  
  If you check guns on the auction side, you will see what I mean.

  I believe Ruger started using the prefix system in 1979 to make the Feds happy.

  Some models received the prefix serial number in 1968 and others in 1969 to comply with the Gun Control Act of 1968.
