I have a Carl Gustov Sporting Rifle. The cartridge designation reads "30-06 Nitro?

I'm curious as to what the "Nitro" means.

  Without getting into all the machinations of proof marks and stamps, there are two simple designation for the term 'Nitro'.
  
  Nitro is a stamp indicating that the rifle or firearm has been proofed to smokeless powder pressure levels.
  
  Nitro was also stamped on rifles and other firearms to denote the transition from black to smokeless powder. Nitro was used to indicate that the firearm was tested to use smokeless powder loads.
