    Te bullet may be the same diameter. However the cartridge case is a different size. For the most part there is a limited number of bullet diameters in today's Popular ammo from .17 -.458 but hundreds of different case sizes to hold the powder to propel these bullets.

    35 Remington was initially developed for use with the early Remington semi-auto rifles and later adopted by many other manufacturers for use in bolt and lever guns - it has a power level near to a just above the .30-30. The 35 Whelen started life as a "wild-cat" round developed by necking up the .30-06. It has considerably more power (ME) than the Rem. Cases are also quite different in length, head and mouth diameters.

    About the same difference between 30-30 and 30-06.
    The 35R is a low pressure cartridge operating at pressures much lower than the 30-06.

    32 Magnum hit it right on the head. The 35 remington was chambered in the model 8 Remington auto. This rifle in this caliber was used by Texas Ranger Frank Hamer when he and others killed Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. The 35 Whelen is a wildcat developed by Col Townsand Whelen based on the 30-06 case.
