    How can you sell a rifle if you dont know the basic facts of your firearm. Its also immpossible to place a value on it without knowing what it shoots. $2000 could be hundreds too much or thousands too little. You would never place an add saying "Old Chevrolet car for sale-$20,000,no additional info available" and expect it sell.

    Take it to a local gunsmith and have them check the chamber.
    My guess is that its a 44-40 but it needs to checked out by a smith. They will also be able to tell you if its in shootable condition.

    The only way to absolutely tell what cartridge it's chambered for is to have a gunsmith do what is called a chamber cast. This is done with a low melting point alloy. Once the chamber cast is made the dimensions of the casting is compared to that of known 19th Century black powder cartridges, to ascertain what cartridge the rifle is chambered for.

    One that old might well be a .44 Ballard Long Rimfire.
    Can you tell where the firing pin strikes, rim or centerfire?
