1911 Slide Over Travel

When I pull the slide back to rack a round, it does not go forward, with or without a magazine, it just sticks there.

I have to whack the back of the slide (really hard, worried about slam fire) to get it to go forward. Whats going on?

  What guide rod is in it [?]
  Is there a recoil buffer in it [?]

  Springfield 1911 Long Slide
  2 piece guide rod, Bull barrel, no bushing
  Was working fine, just started doing this.
  
  I took the recoil buffer out a while back after reading perry shooter comments.
  
  Everything is stock.

  You have something between the Slide and Frame in the Rail area. This will sometime happen if you try to run a bore brush through the barrel and don't remove the barrel from the slide. Now would be a good time to completely strip the top half and remove at least the hammer from the frame Now cycle the bare slide on the frame. to see if has any binding. You can use this as a learning experience to take the pistol completely down to the last part . It is always good to know the purpose of each and every part. You don't need any Tools to take any thing apart but the grip screws. A Pin punch is handy and so is a small screw driver to remove the Magazine release to remove the trigger. But you can use the hammer strut to remove all pins and the 3 leaf spring to remove the magazine release. Feel free to send personal EMAIL if you have questions.

  Figured it out thanks to PS's idea about interference. One of my screws that mounts the scope rail on the slide was protruding too far and was hanging on the barrel groove, preventing it from moving forward. I had removed the mount but when I put it back, I forgot that each screw has to go in a certain place due to the variances in hole depth.

  Likely the disconnect isn't moving down into the frame. Could be the center leg of the sear spring is too short and bearing low on the angled portion at the back of the spade.
  
  Run a quick test.
  
  Hold the trigger to the rear and rack the slide. It should run forward smoothly. If it doesn't, the disconnect is protruding too far from the frame, or the front of the center rail is sharp and square...not camming the disconnect easily. It should have a small bevel...but don't file on it just yet. If you remove toomuch, it won't strip a round from the magazine. It's more than likely the sear spring, with a smaller possibility that the angled section of the disconnect is out of spec. The angle should be 46 degrees.

  Thank you for the suggestion, however, as stated, the problem was the scope mount screw protruding through the slide, hanging up the barrel.
  
  Gun is fine now.
