Value of firearms

I am new to gunbroker.com and the forums. I have recently started taking a gunsmithing class and one of our assignments is to determine the value of specific guns. My instructor recommended this site and I thought he said there was a view that listed past purchases of guns that would help to determine a fair price for a gun that you might be selling or buying. Can someone point me in the right direction to ascertain this information? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    On the auction side you do a advanced search for completed auctions and it shows you what the various guns sold for. The Advanced Search function is right next to the area at the top of the page where you would type in a word for a simple search-like say colt 38. Click it and it will take you to another page to narrow down what you want plus completed auctions if you desire.

    Welcome to GB, good to have you here. I think that you are well on your way to finding and using the completed auctions for sales information and pricing/valuations.

    Let me mention that when you use the "Ask the Experts" portion of the FORUMS there is a lock after 10 responses. This "go-around" or question and responses, I doubt that it'll have any negative effect or keep you from obtaining the information that you are looking to find.

    However, for some questions, you'll want to perhaps add your follow-up comments as an addendum to your question page; rather than using one of the ten ... comment/response pages. You'd be able to do that by going to the area above your question and hitting the icon that shows a pencil/pen ... you hit that and you can add to or correct what you had initially submitted. Some times ... you need each and every one of the ten responses in order to glean the info you need.

    You can also go into anyone of your response windows and discard or eliminate the entire response window if needed or wanted.

    Just some suggestions that might come in handy for you in the future ... IMHO.

    Yep. Completed Auctions are a much more valid method of determining a gun's value than current auctions with inflated asking prices. If you see the gun you are interested in has sold half a dozen times in the past couple of months for prices ranging from $290 to $310, guess what? You can pretty reliably tell your customer his gun is worth about $300. Of course, having his gun in your hands you can adjust that estimate up or down some based on your very close inspection.     You might also consider that in the vast majority of auctions, the BUYER PAYS for shipping costs. As well as possible FFL receiver fee's.
    So one could reasonably include those amounts into the final sale price as the buyer was willing to pay them to get the gun.

    And some states require the receiving FFL to charge state sales tax on the price PLUS shipping. Here in Washington if I purchase on GB for $300 and pay $30 shipping, my added tax is $28. And I pay $30 transfer. Total for the $300 gun is $388.
