Old S&W Questions
A fellow at work brought in a Smith & Wesson revolver and was wanting to know what model it was. To me, it looks like an older model 10, or pre-10 because there is no model on the crane/yolk. But, the grips are not diamond/checkered like you would see on a Smith from that period. Another thing which throws me off, is the last patent date on the barrel was Dec. of 1914, which is on the top of the barrel. On the right side of the barrel is listed 32 WCF, and the left side of the barrel has the older "lazy &". I'm not sure is the serial range from below the grips will help, but it's 107412, which also matches the cylinder and underside of the ejector (?). Of course, the crane & yolk also have matching numbers too. One last thing, the ejector rod in not shrouded, which I think is pretty much standard for most older revolvers.
What does he have..a model 1905..first or second model change. Also, was 32 WCF what the 32.20 evolved from? Not sure, don't have my books with me for reference on serial ranges for that model.
EDIT:
Thanks ya'll. I thought it was the 1903/1905 (can't ever remember the correct year...) model, just wasn't sure on the "change" number.
Thanks,
Aaron

The 107412 serial number puts it in the range of .32 Hand Ejector model of 1903 - 5th Change if the barrel is stamped 32 S&W. These were made from 1910 to 1917 so there would be no model number stamped in the crane. I suspect the grips have been changed at some point in its life because the originals would have the diamond pattern. This model is built on the round butt small "I" frame with serial range 102501 to 263000.
If the barrel is stamped 32-20 it could be a .32-20 Hand Ejector Model of 1905 - 4th change. This gun is built on the square butt "K" frame. Serial range from 65701 to 144684.0 -
"Also, was 32 WCF what the 32.20 evolved from?".........2 names for the same cart. 0
