USPS SHIPPING QUESTION ..
Been shipping Priority for all long guns .. For instance just sent a gun to Texas from NY all said and done (delivery confo- insurance) $47.00.. I see that if I sent it Parcel it would have been $26.00.. My question is what way to the experts ship via USPS and if you ship Parcel have you had any bad experiences with guns taking 7-14 days to get to destination.?. Usually priority I have it there for customer in 2-4 days ..

You should post the options when you list the gun.
Let them decide if they want to wait the extra week. Is it worth saving money on postage if you have a customer calling every hour asking where's their gun?

47. dollars,,sure that quote was correct.. unless the insurance was for a 1 k plus gun...I just shipped one long gun from midwest to PA. for 22.00, priority. Postmaster did say rates went UP....I have shipped Parcel and with delivery conifrmation got about the same distance as quick as Priority.? Go figure...
Also shipped "priority" to Hawaii Jan.19,,item arrived Feb. 5...[B)] go figure...... I like using USPS,,BUT lately things have not been consistent.0 -
Yes I checked it online.. Weight 16lbs, 9 oz... 51"x7x9 .. Insurance $399 with delivery.. From zip 13783 to 78832.. I usually charge $40 flat rate on the auctions so Ive won some and lost many more.. 0 -
That still seems out of line...The "priority" that went to Hawaii was a Jap 38,,and it was a lonnnngggg box...it cost 43.00 from Il...Don't know how they come up with 44.00 but seems out of line. 0 -
In line or out of line, it costs what it costs.
MFI's fee can be confirmed by using the USPS online calculator. There's no arguing with the postal clerk, the computer only shows the exact charge.
UPS & Fedex also have online calculators, which make it easy to compare rates. USPS charges twice what everyone else charges for insurance; they acknowledge that, & justify it by saying it helps defray their other operations.
I have a Fedex account, & they give me a discount that is not published. But, my PO is 10 minutes away, Fedex & UPS hubs are > twice that. Plus, I often have to wait 30 minutes at UPS. You just have to balance all the variables.
Problem is, a lot of folks don't understand how expensive shipping has become. And, if you are in business, you need to be compensated for your packing & shipping time, materials, & gas.

I just double-checked. If you pay & print your label online, Priority Mail is $42.94 with $399 insurance or $37.24 without. If you pay at the Post Office, the cost is $46.40.
Texas is an expensive postal zone. As I recall, Hawaii is actually cheaper! I always have to charge more when I ship to Texas.0 -

I would never ship a gun by parcel post. It goes to the very bottom of the pile and, time-wise, you might as well send it by stagecoach!
It's a long way to Texas from New York. What's gonna make your buyer happier: 3 days by Priority Mail or 3 weeks by Parcel Post?0 -

Don't believe what the post office says. I bought a knife from California when I lived in Virginia. It took almost a month to reach me through parcel post! It would have only cost the seller 50 cents more to send it by Priority Mail and he charged me plenty to cover it.0 -

Had a package shipped to me parcel post from Miss. It got to Cinncinati in two days. Took five days to get to me on the other side of OH. Never could figure that out. 0 -
I seem to recall that a long time ago firearms had to be shipped first class mail. This was before priority mail came about. About this same time, transit times for parcel post mail had improved and priority mail came about. This led to vastly increased rates for parcel post and more mail being sent as priority class.
Spider, it does not make sense that shipping from the east coast to Texas would be as much as it would cost to Hawaii, since rates are based on the distance sent from the originating point.0 -

Probably SOP since transit time for Priority Mail must be faster than that of Parcel Post Mail for obvious reasons.0 -

Yeah, they changed it all around a year or two ago. I used to quote a flat $7 rate for shipping a 2-pound Ka-Bar by Priority Mail but now I lose money if someone lives in one of the "forbidden zones". [:(]0
