Blue job confusion
I recently bought a single shot shotgun for $25. It is a springfield model 944 from Savage Arms. I stripped the blue and rust from the barrel, but the reciever blue will not come off. It looks more like paint than blueing. I know it came from the factory this way. I've seen other firearms with the same finish. kind of a gloss black. I can't stand it. Should I remove it? How can I remove it? can I apply stanndard blue once it is off? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It could be paint on cast white metal. Does a magnet stick to the frame? If it's stuck that good I leave it on and just do the barrel. 0 -

Unless its really worn and ratty-looking, probably not. It may be some sort of enamel paint, and if you take it off, you'll have to put something else on there. If you are going to change the color, it may be easier just to put the new paint right on top of the old.
-How can I remove it? Depends what it is. If its a paint of some sort you MIGHT be able to find a paint stripper that will work. In general, sandblasting tends to remove just about any paint or coating.
-Can you apply standard bluing once its off? That depends on what kind of metal its applied on, but I'd assume NO. If the metal underneath were amenable to bluing, it probably would have been blued already, instead of painted.0 -
It is very "ratty" looking! I believe that I will apply a new enamel over the old as beantown suggested. What type of enamel would folks suggest? I will blue the barrel. I wont just leave the reciever alone. It looks like hell, and I paid 25.00 for the firearm. I want to play with some different applicatons on this one. Then when I am done, I will probably give the gun awaty for another to "play with" 0 -
Probably a cast reciever that won't accept bluing.( *$%#^ Ruger backstraps and trigger guards) Midway sells several spray on finishes. 0 -
Brownell's bake-on "gunkote" is easy to use, not too expensive, and supposedly gives good results.

Then again, ask yourself if you really want to spend $32 on a can of paint to refinish a $25 gun?
If you want to go low-tech, you might try Krylon spray on epoxy enamel paint. Good stuff for $7 a can!0 -
the receiver is not carbon steel. it is made from an alloy. that is why it is not blued. to finish, i would suggest blasting with glass beads and using the bake on finish of yur choice. hope this helps. 260 0 -
On the cheap. With a decent look try self-etching spray paint from O'Reiellys. Prob not spelled right, but it works good on my mossy 500 I use for turkeys and my stainless 300 o use for pigs and deer 0 -
