Winchester 1892 - what is it?

I picked up a Winchester model 1892 in a trade this weekend and was hoping someone could tell me more about it and an approximate value.

The rifle is 25/20 caliber, 20" round barrel, carbine rear sight, brass blade front sight, shotgun buttplate. The rifle has a 2/3 length magazine tube.

The receiver has little to no blue and the barrel has very good blue; minor surface rust here and there. The action is smooth and strong, no 'looseness' in the action.

The sights are both in great condition. The rifle has a very good bore. Serial number is 54181x.

I would think it's a carbine, but there is no saddle ring. Is this normal? Could it be a short rifle?

    Bert, thanks for the Cody link. I called yesterday and they said the records for the 1892 only go up to serial #379,000. She said there was a fire that destroyed the records above that serial number. This rifle is in the 541k range, so, I'm in need of experienced expert opinion :-)

    Not a short rifle. With that barrel, sights and forend, I would say it's a special order carbine. Unless, of course, there's been after-market alterations. I'm sure readers more "expert" than me will chime in.

    You have a special order Model 1892 Carbine. The condition is normal for a 1910 vintage gun. The value is most likely to be in the $1300 - $1500 range.

    Bert, thank you very much for the information. Would the magazine, the lack of saddle ring and the shotgun butt stock be considered the special order features?
