Any experts on SAA Grips?

Civilian model 44-40 "Frontier Six Shooter" with ivory grips, would these come from the Colt Factory of after market, anyone ever seen these grips or know anything about them?

    Ivory grips have been used on Colt Single Actions as "Special Order" grips throughout Prewar production. They varied in type (one piece, two piece, without medallions, with medallions, different types of medallions) based on the period of production. If original to a Single Action, it will be stated on the Colt Archive Letter.

    I'm not going to follow the link because the last time that I clicked on a picture of the patent markings of your 1st Artillery revolver I got a very strange pop-up.

    Unfortunately, not factory, not original to that Single Action. Honestly, I'm not a real expert at identifying Ivory, so I can't tell for sure if they are real ivory.

    Spider, can you tell if they are real Ivory? They almost have the look of that synthetic material that was popular back in the 50's/60's?

    Looks like 2 different guns . one has early bulls-Eye ejector head and this would be on Black powder frame other pictures show a later spring loaded cylinder pin latch ??? very difficult to tell with more then one pistolwhat your question truely is, Grips MAY be Ivory but . not factory fitted to the pistol shown

    No, I can't tell as I don't see any grain. I know what you mean - they look sort of like celluloid ivory.

    I believe the grips are Franzite brand plastic grips from the 50's or before because of the highlighting and lack of grain.
    The name may be moulded into the back.
    Those steerhead grips I've seen have the steer head on the right grip as a palm swell and nothing on the left grip.
    I don't believe they're celluloid.
    You can take a scraping from the inside of one grip and ignite it.
    Celluloid (nitrocellulose) will go up in a flash.

    They look very much like plastic Franzite brand grips from the 50's or before because of color, highlights, and lack of grain.
    A scraping can be made from inside a grip and lit with a match. If it's celluloid (nitrocellulose) it will burn with a flash.
    Ivory will smell like burnt hair and plastic will burn slowly with black ash.
