M14/M1A Guys....
What is a good book, or better yet, a website that details how to dismantle the rear sight on my M1A so I can swap out the aperture? I also need to know how to remove the bolt. Army TM, or is there something better? Thanks in advance for any help.

Of course everything seems easy when you can do it in your sleep but having just has to ask for help over on GD to get my screen size back to normal I can understand your dilemma! The M14 rear sight is for all practical purposes (elevation calibrated in meters instead of yards) identical to the rear sight found on the M1 Garand:

There is a captive nut in the center of the windage knob and once you loosen the nut (it will do fall out...Or at least it should not!) you can unscrew the windage knob from the rear sight base. Once that knob is out then you can remove the elevation pinion and the aperture will slide right out of it's track in the rear sight base. Slide the new aperture in but if it a hooded NM aperture then it may or may not fit the standard rear sight base and you'll might need a NM base. Once the new aperture is in place reinstall the elevation pinion (put a drop of oil on it's teeth), check to see that it is engaged with the aperture, screw the windage knob back into the sight base so that it lines up with teh shaft on the elevation pinion and then tighten up the captive nut until everything is secure. Don't over tighten the captive nut or you will have to struggle to turn the windage knob and elevation pinion. You just want it snug so that nothing will shift during firing.0 -
