Winchester Model 12 value +/-

I have a Winchester Mod 12, 12 ga. SN 563845 (manufactured in 1929), standard model, full choke originally, but prior owner installed a "Cutts compensator"(whatever that is) so not sure of original barrel length, checkered forearm and stock, black plastic buttplate, vented rib, overall condition is good/very good. Any good guesses as to value?

    Pictures, we must have pictures. As you stated, it's been altered and as such it's just a shooter, $250-$400 in my neck of the woods.

    beside the 'cutts' there is the "vented rib".......they didn't have them in 1929. just another $250 +- shooter.

    Well, one could hope... Thanks guys. Much appreciated. Dad got it for me about 15+ years ago for about $100. Good deal, but not as good as he was hoping:( Still a great gun though. Love it.

    A friend and I collect old shotguns with choke devices on them. The Cutts Compensator was the premier unit when these devices were popular. It is surprising how many different units there were. There was even one that automatically tightened the choke at each shot. I wanted badly to have a Cutts installed on my Ithaca 37 in the early 60's but with a young family, I couldn't afford it. (It cost $21.25 to have one installed in 1965 and extra tubes were $3.25. My Ithaca cost about $92 new.) Now, those shotguns with choke devices already on them go cheap since collectors don't want them. So now I own several and I'm glad I waited. They work just as well now as they did then and just as well as the "screw-in" chokes that everybody wants today. In addition, the Cutts had the additional advantage of slightly reducing recoil. You have a good old gun there and the Cutts increases its usefulness if not its value. Get some tubes in Imp. Cyl. and Mod. (if you don't already have them) and enjoy hunting with it.

    Your Model 12 was manufactured in the Spring of 1928. If you want to know the exact date, contact the Cody Firearms Museum research office, and for a nominal fee, they will provide the exact date it was serialized.

    Thanks a bunch for the additional info. That's great. I'm still amazed that an 83 year-old gun would look so nice. Shows some "experience" but not "old age". (We should be so lucky, eh?) Can't figure out how to load a pic. Wouldn't do it justice anyway.

If you really want to know about your gun follow the turorial above on how to load photos. Good luck.
