unusual rem model 721

have a rem 721 in 30-06 that doesnt have a serial number stamped on receiver.anyone know why this is? gun is about new condition.

  I've seen some early ones had the number on the inside of the receiver in the left lug race-way.
  
  EDIT: Remington was pretty consistent in marking their barrels with a date code. See if you can find a 2 or 3 letter marking on the side of the barrel in the chamber area. Your Rem collectors will be able to translate that for you.

  thanks, found same on rem collectors site. seems like its a 1947-48 gun.
