In my opinion the price of this shotgun was Cheap because it is a very cheaply made shotgun out of questionable materials. Any shot gun that would open upon firing is also very dangerous to use.and may be injure the shooter. This shotgun Needs to be taken to a gunsmith. I believe he will find that due to the softness of steel used the gun may be beyond repair or cost more then the gun is worth to FIX. On the other hand it may be able to be repaired and used for the purpose you bought it for.

I would shelve it until it gets fixed. I have seen self openers before and they are usually the product of BUBBA. What if they worked on the trigger too? I'll bet you can find a nice old Stevens at a good price locally.

I've seen several good quality shotguns do this, it usualy is 'shooter error'. when you fire a shot with your hand wraped around the grip, the shotgun recoils and the 'top snap' hits your thumb opening the action. try either tightly griping the shotgun or put your thumb along side the top snap.
