Hi Standard Dura Matic M101

Any advice? I now have a Hi Standard Duramatic M 101. After taking it apart & cleaning it, upon reassembly;

When I place the slide on the frame and pull to the rearmost position, I am unable to press safety "on" locking slide to rear.

Is there a trick to this gun or is my striker pin malfunctioning?

    Slide locks in the rearward position by the safety engaging the forward slide lock position, (circular cutout in slide),. If the slide can't be pulled back far enough to engage the forward cutout. My WAG is something is binding with the two internal springs, ( slide & striker), that are coaxial, with the firing pin/striker fitting inside them.

    EDIT #1, As I vaguely recall from the one I worked on years ago, the sear in the frame has to engage the striker for the Dura Matic to function correctly. The sear is the small lever in the bottom of the frame, if it doesn't interface with corresponding notch in the striker the pistol won't function. Take it apart and make sure the notch in the striker lines up with the sear.

    Could be since when I remove the striker and slide springs, it will allow the safety to engage. I just took it apart again and have the same issue. Is there a way to fix the existing springs or better to get new ones?

    When you assemble the pistol you have to make sure that the sear isn't engaging the striker. Pull the trigger, this will disengage the sear from the striker as you pull the slide back. Hopefully this will allow you to engage the safety in the take down notch.

    Disassembled again, same issues. The striker pin (when sear is released) slides all the way back when the first safety is on and will not allow me to go to the rearmost position and lock the safety still. I bet it is those springs...do you think if I brought to a gunsmith he might be able to straighten it out?

    I have always pushed the F.P. back into the cocked position and then put the slide on with no problems
