Winchester 88 magazine
I purchased a win 88 in 308 pre 64. When the action is open and pressure is put on the magazine (upward) while resting it on my hand or sand bag the action will not close. My question, is this normal or is the magazine a post 64 and I need to get a pre 64 mag to correct this problem. My concern is I see a deer while walking, rest the gun with my hand on the mag and the action seizes. Thanks.

Check to see that you have the .308/.243 magazine. Then look when the action is open and there is upward pressure on the magazine - is there interferance between the rear edge of the mag body and the bolt face? May be a small burr or other mechanical interferance preventing the bolt closing. May need to dress the metal to provide relief. 0 -

Good question. I've a Win mod. 100 in .243 cal., (since about 1966).
The 110s and the 88s are near enough to being the same critter.
Have had the same experience with mine. Have found that pressure on the base would always cause binding of the bolt. If at the range and placing much of any weight on the rifle with the magazine in contact with hard surface, it'll do as you have experienced. I had discussed same with a gunsmith, when I was a kid. He stated, "when you know what'll happen .... then don't do that if you don't want that to happen ... !"
I believe that it may be caused by the design of the magazines ... which is for the purpose of locking the bolt open after the last round is fired. The top round tends to "~free-float~"? albit via spring pressure a bit as the round and the carrier are pushed up into the action. With pressure on the base or bottom of the magazine it can force contact or binding with the bolt. I thought that the mags. were for 88s and/or 100s interchangeably ... I haven't one here handy to check with for now.
There is probably no good rationale for exerting the sort of pressure on the magazine ... that would cause this problem.
Please keep in mind that another pain is that if you ease the bolt forward ... it will not seat or "lock" properly ... in like ... when you pull the trigger ... the buck will NOT drop ... unless it drops dead of fright ... or maybe just loses control and falls over laughing at you!
Yeah, been there and done that ... just had none of the bucks drop dead for me without getting hit ... and none of them slowed down enough for me to get a actual shot at them. Have heard a lot of laughing going on in the manzanita and sage and mtn. mahogany though ... and more than a time or two!
Another suggestion too ... if you ever are going to use the flip-down rear site ... make it where it will NOT readily flip Down ... if you do NOT ... it WILL ... and always when you jump the game or you get but a snap shot or you take a shot not realizing that the rear sight is laying Down!!!
The Win 100s and 88s are good for some things, but not the best for everything! Oh, and by the way, as I recall the mods 88s and 100s, and the .243s and the .308s all use the same magazines. (If anyone else knows the facts to be different ... let me know please!)
(I would think that possibly the .284 magazine might very well differ from the above. The contour, etc. of the cartridge more than likely differs sufficiently enough ... just opinion ... not meaning for certain it is fact.)

In reading your posting ... makes all sorts of sense ... Can't think of any use or advantage, with having the "lock-open feature" magazine when when using a lever-action like the M-88, (or probably even a pump-action)!
I'll fall back on the excuse of ignorance on my part ... seldom if ever have used the lever or pump actioned rifles!
Do know that my hunting partner way back when used my M-100 mags with his M-88 ... not certain of his experiences.
((I never appreciated the lock-open for my M-100 actually!))

I do believe that MW has this nailed. Like the Remington magazine for a 742 semi-auto will fit and function in the 760 pump, but hold the bolt open on the last shot. I do believe the 100 and 88 magazines will fit either gun, but the 100 magazines have a hold open feature. I think you have a Model 100 magazine in that 88.

Ok, a couple of things I have noticed in my research the last two days. Yes the back of the magazine does come into contact with the bolt face so I shaved the mag down in a half moon shape and it does not hit that portion of the mag anymore. Now it hits the curved fingers that hold the cartridge in the mag prior to the bolt forcing the top bullet forward.
Now before you comment on my modifying the mag let me tell you a little more. I called dad, he has an 88 pre 64 in 308 (which is why I had to have one, always liked dads gun). I had him try to lock the bolt up on the mag and it could not be done regardless of how much pressure he put on the magazine. It may be an aftermarket clip. Way I see it the owner prior to my purchasing it was smart enough to realize the pre 64 mag was worth about $135 and sold it replacing it with a $35 aftermarket. Either way it is not the mag I want. So I did the google search images and noticed lots of differences. The biggest difference right off the bat is the aluminum foot, the part the cartridges rest on when pushed down into the mag. On pops mag the raised part of this is from front to back all the way the length of the clip. I think the purpose of this shape or part is to force the bottom cartridge to one side of the mag. Two - the arrow on the bottom of the clip is pushed in on his and raised on mine. Third - my clip reads 243 308 and M-88 on it, his has nothing written on it. I know dads is original because he bought his gun new when he was a kid and never lost the mag. I hope this helps some of you. If you have any more ideas or thoughts let me know. I would love to hear from someone who owns both a pre 64 88 and 100 and could try to tell me the difference between the mags. Thanks guys.0
