Help for Mauser Type 22 Rifle

I have one of the Mauser type 22 training rifles that my father brought back from WWII. I would like to restore it. I know that reduces the value of it but its a family heirloom and it will never be sold so it may as well look nice. My problem is the rear sight is missing and I have no idea of that it looked like of how it was fastened to t he gun. There are no visible signs of where of how it was attached. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Some of the markings on the gun are: Top: Gustloffwerk Waffenwerk_Suhl
Left Side: Kal 22 Lang Fur Buchsen
Right Side KK Wehrssportgewehl

    Here is a photo I got off the net of a original German Kleinkaliber-Wehrsportgewehr. These were training rifles dating from the mid to late 30's that were deliberate clones of the 98 K. Including stock cut for military sling and bayonet mount below the muzzle.

    Note the rear sight and it's location. It's not something that could just fall off as it's permanently attached. It had to have been deliberately removed.

    I might have a Gustloff KKW barrel with a base only. IIRC, the Gustloff may have a soldered on base or a base that is sleeved. I'll check this weekend if you'd like. I do not have a sight leaf, but I think a K98 sight leaf should fit, but is graduated higher than the KKW sight which goes to 200 meters.

    Thanks for the info guys. Rufe-snow the pic looks exactly like mine less the sight. I looked close and I can see a slight outline of where the sight use to be. There are no tool or machine marks it almost looks like the sight was soldered or silver brazed on. It this how they were attached?

    Williwm: any info you could provide would be helpful.

    A few follow up questions:

    If I could find a complete Mauser sight would it fit the gun and look close to the original?

    Can I silver braze it on?

    If I silver braze it on and have the gun re blued, will the blueing take on the silver braze?

    I believe that the sight was soldered on rather then silver brazed. Depending on the alloy used the silver brazing would required more heat and because of this discoloration of the surrounding area where the heat was applied.

    You might consider epoxying the replacement sight on rather then soldering or brazing, this would get away from the heat caused discoloration. The epoxy adhesives on the market now are very durable and have replaced soldering and brazing in many gunsmith applications. As long as the radius on the bottom of the replacement sight matched that of the barrel, epoxy adhesives applied properly would create a substantial bond between the two.

    I have the pictured rifle also except mine is an ERMA. I'll look at it in the next few days. On mine the windage is in the front and the rear is 0 to 200 meters. On one of my 8mm I installed a rear sight with with low temp. silver from Brownell's. I have put on dozens ramps on with the stuff and have yet to have a failure.

    I found the barrel, here should be a photo.
    Correct sights are very hard to come by, but they do show up occasionally.

    I don't have a k98 to compare barrel dimensions, but complete k98 sights are very reasonable. I'd consider getting a complete one and follow rufe-snow's advice and epoxy it on.

    still searching for a sight. I was told by someone that these 22 training rifles were based on the GEW98 Mauser. Anyone know if this is true. I found a reproduction sight for a GEW98 at Gun Parts but cant tell from the pic is it matched the one on this thread

    williwm, can you post a pic looking down on the sight?

    z3beemer, I don't think the GEW 98 sight will come close. The sight ladder is graduated in meters for the 8x57 round too. I have the same problem as you, restoring a Paatz with no rear sight. It was the forerunner to your rifle.
    I picked up two rear sights for a .22 trainer, unused, make and model unknown, but very close to the original. Both missing the spring and pivot pin for the ladder.

    I'll have to email some pics of it to you.
    I have a Norinco clone of this rifle using a CZ .22 action, and it looks like the same sight too.
