M1 Grand Extractor

I have an M1 Grand in 30-06 that will not extract the shells after it fires the round. When the bolt moves to the rear after firing the round a small portion of the rim of the case is pulled off at the extractor point. What could my problem be? I have taken the bolt out and cleaned the bolt and the area of the extractor where it grips on to the case(extrator claw) and it did not help. What next???[?]

    I second MW's opinion, unless you have recently adjusted the gas valve, or replaced it. Too much gas can cause that too. I am sure our resident M1 Garand expert will be here shortly, to revise our judgment.

    Are you using 'off the shelf' civvy hunting ammo?

    If so, cease and desist immediately. The reciprocating parts are moving at greater than 2X normal speed. Joe

    I am using LC Match ammo, and military ammo. So what does the grand do to civilian ammo?

    Its what civilian ammo does to Garands. Bend and break op rods mainly.

    How does it bend op rods? Is it to hot?

    In most cases, yes. Not too hot for the bolt and receiver, but usually a slow powder is used that results in too much pressure at the gas port.

    These slower hunting ammos may safely be used if an adjustable gas port is installed. Otherwise stick to powders in speed between IMR 3031 and 4320 and bullets between 150 and 180 grains.

    Clean your chamber with a chamber brush. A USGI brush works well.

    If that doesn't do it, polish with auto polishing compound; if you can rig it up to an electric drill, that will work best.

    If that still won't smooth the chamber, you may need a new barrel.

    My understanding of the Garand op rod is limited to ensuring my reloads are taken from the "M1 Garand" section of the manual, but here goes....

    The "charging handle" end of the op rod has more mass than the thinner section of the op rod - given a sharp rap of gas on the op rod by the gas port, that mass is neither well supported nor in a straight line with the source of the impulse. Since a "body at rest tends to stay at rest" if the rap is too sharp the thinner section of the op rod may bend as a result of the "charging handle" end remaining at rest for a millisecond; and being off center from the recoil impulse. Ammo that produces a "softer" recoil impulse will not deform the op rod, ammo loaded for other rifles does not take this into account.
