what am i doing wrong?

I am ATTEMPTING to bore sight a scope on my dpms 308 rifle. The scope is a burris fullfield II in 4.5-14-42. The mounts are a set of leupold high quick release 1" mounts.

ok so i get the scope on the rifle and stick the laser bore sighter in the end of the barrel and the scope is about 6 inches high across the room. The scope does not have enough adjustment to compensate for this much so i am putting shims under the scope in the back ring. I put the scope back on and the screws are just long enough to clamp back down. And i am still about 3 inches high with the scopes adjustments maxed out. if i put any more shims under the scope the screws wont be long enough to clamp down. If i had a matching set of rings in low profile id put one of them on the front. Is there anything im missing here or do i need to find a differnt set of rings?

    With that much distance between the bore and the scope, you will not likely get them to line up across a room, that distance is too close. Try doing it at 100 yards or more. The bullet needs distance to rise from the bore axis to the sighting plane of the scope.

    take the shims out and try at least 25yds though I suspect you may have to get to 50 or more

    josh, is there any difference between the front and rear mount bases?
    If you don't get a good answer from these pages, call Brownells and ask them about it. I think that your last sentence is the right idea. I've never handled one of those rifles, but what I think I'd do would to be sure, starting out, that the scope line-of-sight is parallel to the line of bore. That's with the scope reticule centered. Once you get that condition, you should be able to get the rifle sighted in with little effort. Be sure also that your laser sighter is not damaged.

    Forget the bore scope. I stopped using mine a long time ago. I just shoot. Start at 25 yards and make sure you have a target thats at least 16"x16". You will be somewhere in there. Zero it at 25yrds, then move back to 100.

    You are just way to close. 25 yards minimum 50 or 100 yards would be better.

    Think about it this way you have 2 straight lines (barrel and the scope line) that are roughly 2" apart, one over the other.

    Now the lower line stays straight (I know bullets don't travel straight but your sighter does). The top line pivots at the adjustment knob on the scope. What you are trying to do is angle the top line down far enough to make the top line cross the bottom line at ~15'. It takes a lot of angle to do that.

    Now think about how little movement it would take to make that top line cross the bottom at 100 yard........

    Even if you were to get your scope on at 15' you would be so low at 100 yard that you totally defeated yourself.



    I don't use any kind of bore sighter. I use one of 2 methods.

    My main method is to put the gun in a vice where I can look though the barrel. I pick something out at about 25 yards though the barrel and lock the gun in place. Then you adjust your cross hairs on the point you see though your barrel. This will easily get you on paper at 100 yards.

    The second method that works well with 2 people is to take a shot at a close target. I usually try 25 but you may have to come closer depending on the target. Shoot one round while aiming at a spot. Then you aim the gun at the target again either locking it in a vice or having someone hold it very still. Then adjust the cross hairs to where the hole is from the round you fired.

    Scopes and their point of impact is only ever really perfectly on at one given range with one particular loading. All other ranges and loads will only be somewhat close. That is why many folks sight in for the middlish part of the range that they expcet will be shooting between. Meaning if you are on at 200yds and are willing to shoot from 0yds to 400yds then you can expect to be somewhat close at the extreems. That is also why we practice and learn how to compenstate for those extreems. I personally don't use the laser sighting systems as I have a good old style bore sighting system. But which ever system you use it is only expected to get you on paper, some what, and then you take it from there.....

    where is the scope mounted is it mounted on the handle by any chance do you have a good cheek weld or do you have to lift your head off of the stock hank k

    yea i got it. i took the shims out and put on a coat to go outside and look at the snowbank about 60 yds away. its right where it should be now. Just need to make it up to the range and see how it is. i always start at 25 yds anyway and move out from there. then i get to test out some handloads ive worked up. hopefully i wont blow the gun up. lol

    Line of sight crosses the bullets path twice making your scope on at two unique distances.
