Remington 700 target tactical, 5R or Tikka T3 Tac?
Anyone have one of these? I have heard bad reviews on the standard VTR triangular barrels but not this one. The fact that it comes with a Bell & Carlson stock is a big plus but if it is a crap barrel...then not so worth it. I am trying to decide between one of these a Tikka T3 Tactical and a Remington mil-spec 5R.

As of the last ten years I chose Savage over Remington specifically because I felt they did a better job on their barrels. In the past couple years, however, Remington has gotten competitive again. I would say the model you are looking at is going to give you better accuracy than most barrels out there. You won't get better unless you go with a custom, installed by a good gunsmith.
As for the triangular barrels, I wasn't and am not a fan of them. I think they allow too much vibration to affect the shot.

I didn't read the rest of the title. I was just thinking of the Remington. Sorry. Yes, I will agree with the Tikka being a top-notch choice. I've shot Tikka Tacticals in both .223 and .308 and they are tack-drivers! I have been extremely impressed with the other and many variations that have come out to our range for deer rifle sight in. One instance in particular was a .270 WSM that was drilling .5 MOA groups. When a company is paying that much attention to accuracy of a 'non-accuracy enhanced' round I think it say's that when they do pay attention it's a real plus as the Tikka Tactical's I shot were all definitely one-hole capable.0 -
No good reason but I just don't like the Tri barrell. I'm sure someone can come up with a reason for it. But I suspect it to be a marketing ploy... But then I'm old and set in my ways and I've been stuck in a snow drift for 3 days Arrrghhhh
BTW I think savage rifles are and have been very underrated for off the shelf accuracy.0 -
I have a 5R - super accurate out to 500 meters, which is far as I have shot it. Surprisingly, most (or all?) of them shoot the same load very well... unusual, I think, for a factory rifle. Lot of discussion about them on the sniper forums.
Don't have either of the other two you mention, but the 5R is great.0 -

I see no one has addressed your original question yet of the Remington or the Tikka. I would go Tikka, in a heartbeat. Yes, Big Green has come on board with their 5R rifled barrels, but other's have had them for a decade, almost. The Tikka is much more ergonomic, which Remington has failed to address with their famed 700, and the B&C stock, is an entry level fiber stock...nothing to write home about. Every Tikka I have seen or shot, has been an absolute tack driver out of the box, with a silky smoothe action, and glass rod crisp trigger...right from the factory. My vote goes for the Tikka.

I have a Tikka T3 Lite in 7mm-08 that is great. Just wasn't sure about the Tikka Tactical b/c I know I will want to replace the stock and there are very limited number if any companies that make one. The 5R is $500 less than the Tikka which would allow me to put $500 towards an aftermarket stock. I don't know.0 -

A friend of mine has the Tikka Super Varmint, and it has the same stock as the Tactical, I believe. It is adjustable for comb height, but not length of pull. It isin 22-250, and with the $30.00/box of 40, winchester 45 grain hollow points, it will literally pound nails at 100 yards from the bench, and on less windy days, at 300 yards, clay pigeons are a given. Not much bad I can say about Tikka, except as you mention, there is not much aftermarket stuff out there for them.
