Scope Mounting Issue (Brwng BAR)
Good Morning,
I have a Browning BAR Grade 2 in 30-06 (referred to as a Type 1?, as it is a 1971 issued rifle, my fathers old rifle).
Originally, the rifle had a BALVAR scope with what I believe is an old redfield one piece base, with front dovetail ring, and rear dovetail windage adjustable ring.
I had the rifle re-blued, and purchased a Leupold VX-3 3.5x10 40 MM scope for it.
Purchased a STD leupold one piece base, and STD medium rings.
After mounting "properly", using alignment bars, and slight lapping of rings, I went to boresight, and used over 90 clicks of travel on elevation turret to get it to zero. I only have 4 clicks of travel left on the scope.
I returned the scope to zero, using the mirror method, tried again...no joy. Tried another boresighter, same issue.
Took it all apart, and tried the scope on my a-bolt, and it boresighted perfectly, with minimal internal elevation travel on scope.
I do not want to have to "shim" the base.
I took the base off, and cleaned the reciever once again. When I lay it flat on the receiver, over the mounting holes, it does not appear to sit flush with the receiver. There is a slight (very slight) amount of play from front to rear (not side to side from what I can tell), and this concerns me.
I put the original base back on the rifle, which appears to have a very slight bend in it, and was able to get the original BALVAR scope to boresite.
I ordered a DNZ Dednutz one piece system for the rifle, and I hope this cures my issue. It is definitely not the scope.
Could the receiver be warped?? If so, it is definitely not visible to my eyes. If it is warped, how do we fix that?
Also am looking at 20 MOA base for the rifle, any ideas on that?
This is driving me nuts!

This might not help, but I had a browning bar safari ll in 300 win mag it was a late 90 s model I think- any way I had a one piece leuopold base and extra high dove tail rings with a bushnell elite 4200 4x16x50. It sighted in fine and was very accurate. I watched the best of the west long range shooting video and so I did one of their suggestions and got a small dremal with a small cutting wheel, I marked the base on the receiver then cut small notches in both then epoxied them and put 35 in lbs on the screws let it dry. Never had any problems with point of impact changes; should of never sold that gun 0 -
You have a very common problem, I have experienced the same thing on many different scope installs over the years at my shop. The Leupold base may be at fault, the DNZ Gamereaper base you ordered will prove that to be true or false. If the DNZ base does not solve the issue you will need to look at Burris's Signature Series rings with the interchangeable pos-align inserts. Burris sells these pos-align inserts with offsets to correct for issues such as your experiencing. The rings can also be found to work with your existing Leupold base. Here is a link to the inserts:

For the degree of correction your rifle is needing I would highly suggest going with the .020 insert.

BTW: I started selling the DNZ Gamereaper rings about a year ago, they are the best one piece ring-base combo on the market today, I would highly recommend them to anyone.0 -
Thanks for the suggestions. I do not want to do the dremel thing, it sounds way beyond my knowledge level, and would hate to ruin this fine rifle.
I am feeling good about the DNZ mount, and I hope that solves my problem. If not, I will go for the Burris pos align inserts. Thanks MK 19 for the info. You have eased my worries a bit, being that you have ran into this before.
Hard to believe a Leupold base being the culprit, but even the good companies put a lemon out now and then. Thank you very much for including the links to the products!

just to note that most bore sighters do not compensate for different mounting heights, they are set for one standard (1.5" over bore) and do not 'calibrate' for anything over this. without shooting the rifle you will not know for sure. 0
