Para Ordnance makes very good 1911 style pistols both double stack and single stack. They have moved from Canada and are now made in the USA!

How about the new Springfield Armory Range Officer? http://springfield-armory.com/armory.php?version=154
over on the auction side they are going for under $800

There is also the new Remington 1911 and Browning is bringing out one-and of course there is always Colt.

I'm currently saving up for this though

Series 70 Colt . If you cant find one well below your price range let me know and I will put one up on auction with a BIN price.

    +1.

In terms of bang for the buck, quality will be as high as any of the others, plus, assuming you buy it right, it will appreciate faster than the others, too.

Here's mine. Its fairly beat-up, but its MA-compliant, and that's a huge plus.

Note the aftermarket Bomar match sights (which I would recommend AGAINST, unless you plan on using the gun solely for target shooting):

If you are looking for a 1911, the Para USA, S&W and Colt, are the only ones in your price range, that are quality, and being made here, in the USA. There are Kimber's, who's quality is questionable, and the SIG's, which are solid performer's, but above your price range.

    Best

    EDIT 1

The HiPoint would be lucky to be able to digest $50.00 worth of the ammo before it stops. The OP says they want reliable, and accurate...the HiPoint is not either.

    For under $1000 I recommend a Hi-Point and $800 worth of ammo.

Our customers are happy with the Taurus 1911. A lot of "bang" for their buck.

Colt Government Series 70 is the one that you want:

You should be able to find a nice one in your price range.
