S&W 500 vs 460 XVR
I am in the market for a hunting revolver, I was set on the model 500 until I found out about the 460 XVR. Does anyone have have any opinions or know of a good place to compare side by side? Thanks for the help.

Do a google and you'll find lots of discussions.
I personally would choose the 460 just for the ability to shoot 45LC, 454 Cassull as well.
I would also think this also would probably mean bullets for reloading would be more readily available and less costly.0 -
I had the 460, it was too much gun for me for hunting. I went back to my contender. The 460 was expensive to shoot, but it was nice being able to shoot .45 colt, .454 casull, and the .460. 0 -
Why not a Ruger Redhawk in 454 Casull? Smaller frame, six shots instead of five, easier to pack around all day and still plenty of punch for hunting or hiking. Ammo quite a bit cheaper too! I had the S&W 500, it was just too expensive to shoot, even with reloading, and it was not comfortable to pack around on all day hikes. 0 -

+1 on that.
Given that choice, I'd take the .460 for exactly the reasons mentioned.
But I wouldn't buy EITHER of these two guns without handling them in person and making sure they meet your needs. They are both absolutely massive, with the biggest variants literally weighing over 5 lbs. As comparison, that's nearly the weight of one of these:
Advantage to the massive weight is relatively low recoil for these powerful loads, but you pay for it in bulk and reduced carry comfort.0 -
Thanks for the input, sounds like the 460 is the best bet. Any opinions on barrel length, I was thinking 10.5" because it has a scope rail. 0
