Colt Model 1911
I am trying to determine the value of a Model 1911 left to me by my Father-in Law. Preliminary research:
Serial number: 156950, Built 1917.
I have a govt leather holster marked 1917
From what I can determine it has not been modified. It still has the correct grips, correct markings, etc. I have a cleaning kit and slides and even some ammo.

If all the numbers match you may have a real treasure. There are several 1911 authoritys on here, Perry Shooter or one of them should be along shortly.
We will need good, close, clear pictures to make a good estemate.

Hello Many of these pistols were refurbished by the military between WW I and WW II . worn or damaged parts were replaced . some were refinished and on top of that most times pistols were issued to Officers and NCO's These guys did not clean their own weapons but had the arms room do it . This led to one guy cleaning say 20 pistols or more at one time and parts got switched. So bottom line with great pictures up close and in focus with good lighting of ALL markings on all parts and at least the barrel out of the gun we may be able give you a price range. Really the best way is a hands on inspection. Thats the Bad news. The good news is you will keep this piece of history in the Family CORRECT [?] It then becomes a moot point as to value but for insurance take pictures and put value of $2000.00 for the complete rig.You will not be far off + or -
EDIT No1 the mark in the form of a circle should beone of the following W G Major Walter Gordon JMG Lt col J.M.Gilbert WGP Major Walter G. Penfield GHS Gilbert H. Stewart These were the military inspectors of 1911 Pistols. The barrel should have Both an H and a P some times they are in sideways format sometimes in an up right format and some time the two letters use the right hand leg of the H serves as the left leg of the P all of these are dependant on serial number yours should have H in a vertical format with a Pabout 1/4 inch over the H or closer to the Muzzle look closely may not be very deep stamp.If you double click on my user name you can send me a email Iwill reply with my personal email address and then you can send me JPG pictures direct. You should have a few letters on the top of the frame hidden when the slide is in place They will be around the disconnector hole one letter G = Government contract and H is inspector mark of Francis L. Broke it down for some pictures.
Here is a description of all the markings I could find:
Left side of slide
PATENTED APR 20 1897, SEPT9,1902 COLTS PT FA MFG CO
DEC19,1905, FEB.14,1911,AUG 19,1913 HARTFORD CT U.S.A.
On the rear of the left side of the slide is a rearing horse.
below the slide on the left is : UNITED STATES PROPERTY
On the left above the mag release is a circle with what appears to be cs and ms.
On the right side of slide is MODEL OF 1911 U.S.ARMY
Below the slide is the serial number No 156950; the o has a line under it.
The barrel has an H on the rear top
The leather holster Has the US on the front and PERKINS CAMBELL 1917 R.J.M. on the back.
I also have a shoulder leather holster with the US on it. It also has the name LT. John W. Gerwig or GERW 18, hard to tell. The more I look at it, the more I think it says Gerwig.0 -
